Alcoyano 2 – 1 Real Madrid: What Zinedine Zidane told his players after shock Copa del Rey defeat

With Los Blancos losing back to back games in cup competitions over the past week, pressure has grown on their manager.

Zinedine Zidane told Real Madrid players to ‘stick together as a team’ after his side’s shock 2-1 defeat to Segunda B side Alcoyano on Wednesday night.

The reigning La Liga champions were further embarrassed by the fact that Alcoyano were playing with 10 men before they scored the winner, with Los Blancos finishing the game with Fede Valverde, Toni Kroos, Casemiro, Eden Hazard, Marco Asensio and Karim Benzema on the pitch.

MARCA claims that while the pressure has intensified on Zidane after his side were knocked out of two club competitions in less than seven days – Los Blancos were defeated in the Spanish Super Cup semi-final last week, the Frenchman’s position as manager is currently not in danger.

The three-time Champions League winning manager is expected to remain at the club’s hot seat for the remainder of the season, after which president Florentino Perez might replace him either with club legend Raul or former Borussia Dortmund and PSG manager Thomas Tuchel.

What Zidane told his players after Alcoyano defeat?

The French manager’s message to his under-criticism players was clear and simple: “Defeats happen, but we must stick together as a team,” per Spanish journalist Jose Luis Sanchez. Though not all is doom and gloom for the Madrid faithful.

That’s because in his last four years as Madrid manager, Zidane hasn’t managed to take his side ahead of the quarter-final stages in the Copa del Rey, with his side’s form in this cup not affecting their fortunes in other competitions. Madrid fans would be hoping that it’s the same case this time too.
