Ligalive looks at the top-scoring defenders across Europe's top leagues
After Sergio Ramos entered the history books with his strike against Real Sociedad, Ligalive looks at the top-scoring defenders in the four major European leagues.
Sergio Ramos added another medal to his trophy-laden cabinet after the defender scored in Real Madrid’s 2-1 win over Real Sociedad at the weekend.
The 34-year-old center back, who has won every possible club title with Real Madrid, and FIFA World Cup and European Championship with the Spanish national team, scored the 68th goal of his La Liga career as Los Blancos put Real Sociedad to the sword and climbed to the top of the Spanish top-flight.
His goal saw Ramos becoming the highest-scoring defender in the entire 91-year history of La Liga, with the Spaniard’s seventh goal of the domestic season seeing him move one goal ahead of former Barcelona defender Ronald Koeman in the all-time scoring charts.
The Dutch defender scored 67 goals during his 6-year stay at the Camp Nou. Ramos has broken his record during his 15th year with the Santiago Bernabeu outfit.
John Terry stands alone on the top of the list of highest-scoring defenders in Premier League history with 41 goals to his name.
Most of the Englishman’s goals were a combination of thumping and/or towering headers but he did manage to smash the odd volley into the net.
His goals for Chelsea as well as his defensive acumen helped the Blues emerge from the backwaters of the Premier League to become a force in English football.
The Stamford Bridge outfit managed to win a remarkable 17 trophies during the Englishman’s time at the club, including five Premier League trophies and one Champions League title.
Legendary Montpellier center-half Laurent Blanc, who went on to manage Paris Saint-Germain, scored 44 goals during his 14-year career in the French top-flight.
His goals however didn’t come in one go as the French World Cup winner spent his time playing in Italy, Spain, England as well as France.
Giacinto Facchetti, the legendary left-back who was a part of the formidable Inter Milan side of the 1960s, scored 59 goals in his career.
He did score few goals than Jose Osvaldo Curti, the defender who notched 64 goals for four Serie A clubs, but with the Argentine also playing as a midfielder in his career, it is Giacinto who is undoubtedly the top-scoring defender in Serie A history.
