Are Liverpool going backwards? Five worrying statistics which show the problem for Jurgen Klopp’s men

Sunday’s drab draw with Manchester United indicated things aren’t quite rosy for Jurgen Klopp’s side as they were for the better part of two years.

Liverpool’s 0-0 draw with Manchester United meant the Reds have now gone 348 minutes without scoring a goal in the Premier League, but their listlessness in front of goal isn’t the only thing Jurgen Klopp needs to address as he aims to guide the Reds to another league title.

The reigning Premier League champions have struggled at the back two. Injuries to Virgil Van Dijk, Joe Gomez and Joel Matip means the Reds have conceded 21 goals after 18 league games, far more than they had let in at the same stage over the past two seasons.

Little wonder, then, that the Reds have dropped more points than they had at this stage last season. Jurgen Klopp’s side, after winning 17 of its first 18 league games last season, were running away with the league title with 52 points on the board.

This season, however, they only have 34 points at the same stage. Remarks about how a congested fixture list might have brought about this downturn in form were credible had it not been for Manchester City and Manchester United – both sides who have done either equally well or better this season than they did in the last one.

Pep Guardiola’s side, who are sitting a point above the Reds with a game in hand, will be only 1 point short of their total of 39 points after 18 games if they win their game in hand. Man Utd, meanwhile, have accumulated 12 points more (37 v. 25) than they had at this stage last season.

That is to say that the Reds’ downturn in form is unique as far as the challengers for this season’s Premier League title are concerned. And they might end up paying for it if they didn’t put up a winning streak, and soon.
