The 27-year-old Swiss midfielder has undergone a turbulent few days at the North London club after his furious reaction to being booed off by his own fans.

Arsenal could reportedly wash their hands off midfielder Granit Xhaka by selling the midfielder in the January transfer window, as per reports.

The Switzerland international was told by manager Unai Emery on Tuesday that he would no longer wear the captain’s armband after his altercation with the Gunners’ fans.

Xhaka was furious at the way the crowd booed him off the pitch against Crystal Palace at the end of October and responded by telling those jeering him to ‘f** off.’

That episode left the club in a difficult situation with the player stepping short of offering an all-out apology that may have repaired his strained relations with the club’s faithful, with reports now claiming that Arsenal are looking for potential suitors for the 27-year-old.

The Mirror reports that after the player declined his manager’s suggestion to immediately say sorry following the incident, Emery has now refused to confirm whether the 27-year-old is part of his future plans at the club.

'The future is Arsenal's future. We have a very important match on Saturday,' the Arsenal boss said while speaking to the press in the build-up to his team’s Wednesday’s Europa League tie against Vitoria.

Reports further claim that Emery – who has stripped Xhaka off the captaincy role and left him out of the club’s squad for three successive games – hasn’t given the player any assurances over his long-term future at the Emirates

Xhaka hoped that after he issued a detailed clear-the-air message on his Instagram account regarding the incident, he would get a recall from the manager. However, as things stand, he hasn’t received any positive response from his manager.

The situation surrounding Xhaka is unclear because, in addition to the player who has gone silent after that Instagram post, manager Unai Emery is also keeping mum on the issue.

“We need to take some decisions... My focus is for tomorrow [on Wednesday’s game vs Vitoria]. He is our player, we want to respect him, said the former Sevilla manager.

Emery was also asked by the gathered assembly of reporters on whether Xhaka’s omission from the squad was permanent, to which he didn’t give a straight answer.

"We’re speaking a lot about that. It’s clear. There’s no more words about that. I told him and told the other captains. Then the time is giving us the next weeks and months, how we can continue with every player.”

The Gunners play their next game against Vitoria without Xhaka, who has now been left out of matchday squads by Unai Emery for three games in a row.
