The Gunners have struggled to stop opponents from scoring goals this season and currently find themselves nine points off Champions League places.

Arsenal are reportedly monitoring the situation of £34m rated Juventus defender Merih Demiral, with the Gunners considering a potential January swoop for the Turkish international.

The 21-year-old central defender was signed by the Serie A giants in the summer from Ligue 1 side Sassuolo in a deal reported to be in the region of 16m.

His move to Turin hasn’t gone well for the Demiral as he has made only 1 appearance for the reigning Italian champions so far this season.

And now Calciomercato reports that Arsenal are keeping tabs on the player which they believe has the potential to solve the club’s defensive woes.

Who is Juventus center-back Merih Demiral?

The majority of Premier League fans might be excused for not being aware of the qualities of the player who has attracted interest from the likes of Manchester United and Atletico Madrid in the past.

Prior to his move to Juventus last summer, Demiral spent the first half of the 2018/19 season with Turkish Super Lig outfit Alanyaspor, who made his loan stay at the club permanent by paying a meager €3.5m fee to his parent club Sporting CP in January 2019.

Only a day later, Demiral was snapped up by the French side Sassuolo, where he played for another six months before joining Juventus in a £15m deal in the summer

While he has been playing at a senior level for quite some time, Demiral rose to international fame with his impressive performance during Turkey’s 2-0 win over World Cup holders France in the recent Euro 2020 qualifying stages.

The 21-year-old was the focal point of the Turkish defense that kept the likes of Kylian Mbappe, Paul Pogba, and Antoine Griezmann quiet that afternoon, with his strength, tackling ability and general physicality restricting the French side to mustering just four shots on target.

Why Arsenal need him?

Although Unai Emery’s side has no shortage of options at the back, their poor defensive form shows that they lack a world-class central defender in their ranks.

The Gunners have conceded 17 goals in the opening 12 games of the ongoing Premier League campaign, keeping only 2 clean sheets in the process.

Their inability to stop opponents from finding their back of the net has left Arsenal at 6th place in the Premier League table, with six points separating them from 4th place Manchester City.

Pressure has increased on Emery in recent months to find a solution to the club’s defensive woes, and he might look towards making a defensive signing in the January transfer window to address the problem.

Furthermore, with Demiral not getting enough playing time at the Turin stadium and EURO 2020 around the corner, the player might himself be tempted by a move to Arsenal to secure more game time in order to cement his place in Turkey’s squad that will take part in next summer’s Euros.
