Arsenal might be forced to face Watford without two of their key midfielders who suffered injuries during the international break over the weekend.

The Gunners, who currently sit at 5th place in the Premier League table, are looking to get back to winning ways after drawing 2-2 with Tottenham in the North London derby a week ago.

However, with two of his key players in Granit Xhaka and Lucas Torreira suffering injuries while on international duty, manager Unai Emery faces a selection headache in the build-up to this Sunday’s fixture.

Provided both the players do not return to fitness in time ahead of the weekend’s fixture, the Arsenal manager would have to make changes to the squad which has started this season for the Gunners.

Xhaka plays down his injury troubles

Xhaka was substituted off during Switzerland’s 4-0 Euro 2020 qualifying win over Gibraltar on Sunday night, with the Swiss team’s official Twitter account confirming his injury.

The midfielder, whose performance has been criticized in recent weeks, later confirmed that the Achilles injury which prevented him from completing the game is one which he has been carrying for several weeks.

“I’ve been suffering from Achilles tendon pain for a few weeks now. I felt it during the game,” he told reporters, via Metro .

“It hurts now, but it should be okay otherwise,” said Xhaka in an attempt to play down the significance of his injury.

Xhaka had suffered an injury to his lower back in Arsenal’s Premier League opener against Newcastle and was subsequently ruled out from the side’s next game against Burnley.

Lucas Torreira started Uruguay’s 2-1 win over Costa Rica in a friendly in the early hours of the weekend, but was substituted after he asked the bench to take him off the pitch.

As per the reports in the 23-year-old’s home country, Torreira suffered a knock close to the half-time whistle and was duly subbed off by the team management wary of aggravating the injury any further.

His injury, alongside that of Xhaka, has come at a crucial time for the Gunners. Starting from this Sunday’s clash against Watford, Arsenal will take play 6 fixtures over the coming 20 days, including a heavyweight clash against Manchester United at the end of September.

Furthermore, while Xhaka has attracted criticism with his performances, Torreira has been the one shining light for the Gunners during their last 2 difficult fixtures against Liverpool and Tottenham.

Therefore, if Unai Emery’s men are to continue their early-season momentum, they would be sweating on the fitness of the Uruguayan ahead of a busy fixture period.
