Arsenal were at the receiving end of a stunning comeback as hosts Watford came back from 2 goals behind to draw the game at the Vicarage Road.

With both Manchester United and Chelsea winning their games on Saturday, the Gunners knew that only a win would help them maintain the pressure on their rivals for a top four finish.

For the opening 45 minutes, the Gunners looked on track to do just that. Two first half goals from Pierre Emerick-Aubameyang made sure that the Gunners went into the half-time with one eye already on three points.

However, just as the game looked to be in their bag, calamity struck the Arsenal defense. A Papastathopoulos Sokratis mistake to clear the ball after goalkeeper Leno had passed him the ball allowed Gerard Deulofeu to pounce, with Cleverly picking up the pieces from the edge of the box to bury the ball past the hapless Arsenal goalkeeper.

From then on, it was pretty-much one-way traffic before another Arsenal defender, David Luiz, had a brain fart moment. The former Chelsea defender gifted the home side a penalty by clearly fouling Roberto Pereyra in the box, who made no mistake from the resulting spot-kick to level the game at 2-2.

After enjoying a somewhat decent start to the season, a draw against Watford means that Gunners have failed to win any of their last 3 games in the competition.

Here’s how the Arsenal Twitter reacted to their team’s hapless display at the Vicarage road:

Defense a huge worry for Unai Emery

After a summer in which the Gunners broke their transfer record to sign an attacking player, their performances so far show that Arsenal made a huge mistake by not strengthening their defense.

One statistic which sheds light on how poor the Gunners have been defensively is the amount of penalties which they have conceded in the first five games of the season.

However, it isn’t that the Gunners’ defense is poor only on specific occasions. Instead, as the below-mentioned tweet shows, it has been dismal right from the start, with no signs that it will ameliorate in the months to come.

Lastly, while the fact that Arsenal lost a 2-goal lead might suggest those who didn’t watch the game to infer that the Gunners were unlucky to come up with all three points, it was Watford who deserved to win this game.

Arsenal next face Bundesliga side Eintracht Frankfurt in their Europa League opener on Thursday night.
