The former Aston Villa winger has been a consistent part of the Manchester United squad ever since his £15m move from the midlands club in the summer of 2011.

Manchester United full-back Ashley Young has revealed that he spurned the opportunity to join Liverpool and Man City by opting to make the move to the Red Devils instead.

The 34-year-old winger-turned-full-back has claimed that he was the subject of transfer interest from both Manchester City and Liverpool after his impressive four-year spell with Aston Villa.

Young moved to the Old Trafford stadium at a time when there was only one year remaining on his Villa contract, with the result that several teams were after his services.

However, as the former England international has explained while speaking to UTD Podcast, he only wanted to play under Sir Alex Ferguson at Man United.

During the interview, Young admitted that even before meeting the legendary Manchester United manager, he knew he wanted a move to the Red Devils.

Talking to the UTD Podcast, the 34-year-old explained: “My agent called me and said: ‘Listen, you’re going into the last year of your contract (at Villa), there are a few teams that are in for you'”.

Young stated that by the time the talk happened, he and his agent had already spoken with Man City officials whereas Liverpool’s interest in his services was revealed during the talk.

“He said Liverpool. We’d already spoken to City. Then he said United had come in. And I said: ‘When am I meet Sir Alex (Ferguson)? Where’s the pen?’ There was no other place I wanted to go.”

His decision to make the move to the Old Trafford has done wonders for Young who has already made over 250 appearances for the club, winning one Premier League title in the process.

What next for Young?

The latest contract which Young signed with Man United in February this year is set to expire at the end of the 2019/20 season.

The full-back’s 8-year spell at the Old Trafford stadium is set to come to an end with United already looking for players that could replace him in their squad.

One option for Young, once his contract with United expires, is to follow the footsteps of the likes of Zlatan Ibrahimovic who went to the MLS following his stint with United.

However, if he intends to prolong his playing career in the Premier League, the Englishman might want to follow in the footsteps of Wayne Rooney who played a full season for Everton before moving to the US.

Whatever the next destination in his career might be, the consistency with which the 34-year-old has served United will make sure that the Old Trafford faithful will remember Young for years to come.
