Diego Simeone has revealed that Jurgen Klopp is the rival manager he admires the most, with the Atletico Madrid boss impressed with the German’s consistent playing style over the years.

Atletico Madrid manager Diego Simeone has named Liverpool boss Jurgen Klopp as the manager which he admires the most.

The former Borussia Dortmund manager has made fans around the globe with his likeable persona. His on-field bear hugs to his players and fist pumps to the Anfield crowd during every home game has made Klopp one of the most amiable figures in the game.

However, while the 52-year-old undoubtedly has a cheerful demeanor, it’s the results his teams have achieved over the years and not his on-field manners which will define the legacy of the German manager for decades to come.

After managing the then minnows Borussia Dortmund to back to back Bundesliga titles at the start of the current decade, Klopp then turned Liverpool from a side struggling to carry the weight of its history to one which lifted the Champions League trophy last season.

Klopp, who, like Simeone, has had to build a team after losing a star player many times in his managerial career, has earned the admiration of the Argentine boss for his consistent playing style.

During an interview with Spanish radio station Cadena Ser, the Atletico Madrid manager spoke about signing Joao Felix and losing Antoine Griezmann to Barcelona, while also revealing his praise for Klopp.

“A coach I admire? Jurgen Klopp. No doubt,” stated the combative Argentine.

“He had to lose things and also win beautiful things, but always with the same style. I see him close to his players.”

Klopp has reinvigorated Liverpool following a slump in club’s fortunes over the past decade. He has taken the Reds to three European finals during his four-year stay at the club, while also turning the side into a serious title contender in the Premier League.

Lucas Hernandez’ exit was most damaging for us, claims Simeone

The Argentine told the interviewer that while the exit of Antoine Griezmann also affected his squad, it was the departure of left-back Lucas Hernandez which was damaging for the club.

After coming through the youth ranks of the club, the 23-year-old was a part of Atleti’s senior squad for five seasons before he left for Bayern Munich earlier this season.

“The player exit this summer that was the most damaging for us was that of Lucas Hernandez,” Simeone added.

“He was a kid of ours, from the youth system, he was one of us – just like Saul [Niguez], Koke, Thomas [Partey]… Lucas came along at the same time as Thomas, those players are important.”

With eight matches gone, Atletico Madrid currently find themselves at third place in La Liga, three points behind reigning champions and current league leaders Barcelona.
