Reports from a reputed Spanish news outlet confirm that even after spending more than $100m on new signings this transfer window, Atletico Madrid aren’t done yet.

According to reports coming from Spanish media outlet Sport, Atletico Madrid are expected to complete the signing of 60m rated midfielder Rodrigo from Valencia, a move that is surely going to reinforce the team’s credentials to challenge for La Liga title this season.

News of his imminent departure have come after a fortnight after it was revealed that Rodrigo wasn’t training with his Velncia teammates in a hope of forcing his move to Diego Simeone’s side.

However, it isn’t that Valencia doesn’t want to see the back of the midfielder who scored 8 and assisted another 6 goals for them last term. Instead, with Valencia manager Marcelona experimenting with Kevin Gameiro and Goncalo Guedes in attack, both Valencia and Rodrigo are happy to part their ways.

What Atletico Madrid fans can expect from Rodrigo

For a player who started his senior football career Real Madrid C, Rodrigo Moreno has come a long way to earn his move to the 10 time Spanish Champions.

After spending only 1 season at Bolton, he then moved to Portuguese club Benfica where the 28-year-old spent 5 seasons, scoring a respectable 27 goals in a mere 68 appearances for the club.

However, while he fulfiled his potential whenever given the opportunity, chances were few and far between for the Spanish playmaker at Benfica, hence the reason why after spending a year at loan at Valencia, Rodrigo made his move permanent to the Spanish side at the start of 2015/16 season.

While he did take some time to settle in Valencia, Rodrigo eventually came good in the 2017/18 breakthrough season in which he scored a career-high 16 goals for Valencia to lead them to Champions League qualification. Therefore, while many people outside Spain might never have heard of him, the 28-year-old will surely add goals to the Atletico Madrid squad.

For a club that isn’t known for spending lavishly on players, Atletico Madrid have thrown their reputation of being penny-pinchers outside this window by breaking the bank to sign a number of players.

Even before Rodrigo walks in through the door, the Spanish side have already spent over €200 million on new signings in the 2019/20 summer transfer window in order to strengthen the club in all key areas.

One signing which made waves around the footballing world was Atletico’s capture of 19-year-old wonderkid Joao Felix, who cost the club a whopping €126m in transfer and add-ons to complete his move from Portuguese side Benfica.

Other than that, the club has paid a combined €97million to secure the services of defensive midfielder Marcos Llorente, centre-back Mario Hermoso, right-back Kieran Trippier and centre-back Felipe, giving their fans plenty of reasons to be excited.
