  • La Liga title will be at stake when Atletico Madrid host rivals Real Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday afternoon
  • Diego Simeone’s men might have slipped up in recent games but still hold a 5-point lead over Real, that too with a game in hand
  • Zinedine Zidane’s men are coming into this game as favorites after winning six of their last seven games in all competitions

Atletico Madrid will be aiming to give their La Liga title credentials another shot in the arm when they host Real Madrid at the Wanda Metropolitano on Sunday afternoon.

Diego Simeone’s men have been defying expectations thus far this season with performances that have opened up a 5-point gap for them at the top of the table. A victory on Thursday will give them the chance to extend it to eight points, even if 2nd placed Barcelona defeat Osasuna late in the night.

Zinedine Zidane’s men will therefore know that anything but a victory will seriously harm their chances of retaining the Spanish top-flight title. Though their recent form, which has helped Real collect 13 points from a possible 15, makes them slight favorites for this clash.

Atletico Madrid Vs Real Madrid Team News

Reports coming out from Spain claim that Simeone might decide to bench Joao Felix on Sunday, with summer signing Luis Suarez replacing his Portuguese teammate in the starting XI. That shouldn’t come as a surprise given that Felix has just 2 goals in his last 15 appearances for Atleti.

It is also being claimed that Los Colchoneros will be able to welcome the likes of Yannick Carrasco and Kieran Trippier back in the side. The former missed the side’s last few games due to injury, whereas England international Trippier is back after serving a gambling-related ban.

Possible Atletico Madrid starting line-up: Oblak; Hermoso, Trippier, Savic; Koke; Niguez, Lemar, Llorente, Vrsaljko; Suarez, Correa

Real Madrid have two injury concerns ahead of Sunday. Zidane won’t be able to pick up the likes of Dani Carjaval (hamstring) and Sergio Ramos (knee) on Sunday. The duo’s absence will force Zidane to pick Lucas Vazquez and Nacho as their replacements.

However, not all is doom and gloom for Madrid on the injury front. Karim Benzema is expected to return to the starting XI after missing his side’s last three games in all competitions, with both Eden Hazard and Eder Militao expected to be named among the replacements.

Possible Real Madrid starting line-up: Courtois; Mendy, Nacho, Varane, Vazquez; Kroos, Casemiro, Modric; Isco, Benzema, Asensio
