Barcelona presidential candidate Victor Font makes ambitious Xavi Hernandes promise to fans

The 48-year-old businessman is hoping to convince the ‘Socios’ to vote for him in Barcelona’s next presidential elections scheduled to be held in January.

Victor Font has promised Barcelona fans he’ll appoint Xavi Hernandes as the club’s next manager if elected at the club’s president – failing which he’ll give free season tickets for a year.

The next Barcelona presidential elections are scheduled to take place on January 24, 2021. The winner of the elections will not only take charge of the world’s biggest club for six years, but will also be held responsible for the club’s fortunes on the pitch.

The Camp Nou outfit’s fortunes have been going south since their demolition at the hands of Bayern Munich in the Champions League last season. The humiliating defeat saw Barca gave Quique Setien his marching orders before appointing Ronald Koeman as his replacement.

Koeman was given the role partly due to his previous association with the club as a player. More importantly, however, it was the way he had overturned the fortunes of the Netherlands national team that convinced Josep Maria Bartomeu and co to give the Dutchman the reins of Barca.

Only four months later, Bartomeu has resigned from the presidency after being on the receiving end of debilitating criticism following Lionel Messi’s attempts to leave the club. Koeman may have survived the fiasco but he may not continue to do so for soon.

The Catalan giants are sitting at 5th place in La Liga table, eight points behind leaders Atletico Madrid who have a game in hand over the Camp Nou outfit. Barca have won only two out of their last four games in La Liga and may sack their third manager in just over a year if results didn’t improve soon.

And should that happen and Font wins next year’s presidential elections, the 48-year-old won’t leave any stone unturned to convince Xavi Hernandez to return to the club he remained a part of for the better part of two decades.
