The 23-year-old attacking midfielder who came out of Barcelona’s LA Masia academy was snapped up by Dinamo Zagreb when he was only 16.

Bundesliga leaders RB Leipzig are reportedly very close to securing the signing of long-term Barcelona and Manchester United transfer target Dani Olmo.

Mundo Deportivo claims that the Dinamo Zagreb player, who was previously linked with Barcelona, is set to complete his transfer Germany later this month.

Olmo came through Barcelona’s famous La Masia academy at the age of 16 and was tipped to become the next big thing to come out of the club’s ranks.

However, instead of staying put and fighting for his place at the Camp Nou, the attacking midfielder chose to move to Croatia by signing for Dinamo Zagreb.

The 21-year-old attacking midfielder has long been on Barcelona’s transfer radar due to his impressive performances in the Croatian league for Dinamo Zagreb.

Olmo has played in all of Zagreb’s six games in the group stages of this season’s Champions League, scoring 2 and assisting another goal in the process.

He was one of the star players for the Spanish U-21 side during last summer’s U-21 Euros where Olmo scored 3 goals for the national side.

His brilliant performances throughout the competition saw Olmo being named in the UEFA European Under-21s Championship team of the tournament.

The player got the reward for his brilliant performances for the junior Spanish side when, in November last year, he was handed his senior team debut against Malta.

Why Barcelona missed out on Olmo?

Barcelona have taken the right step by appointing Quique Setien as a replacement for sacked Ernesto Valverde 14/01/2020 PACOLARGO/PANORAMIC PUBLICATIONxNOTxINxFRAxITAxBEL

Given the fact that he rose through the club’s ranks before making his name for club and country, it seems surprising that Barca have missed out on Olmo.

Mundo Deportivo reports that the club decided against re-signing Olmo because they think he doesn’t have what it takes to fit the profile of a player the club wants to sign as a long-term replacement for Luis Suarez.

The Uruguayan striker has recently suffered a knee injury that could keep him out of action for months and deprive Barca of one of the most potent strikers in world football.

New manager Quique Setien is keen to sign a traditional No.9 to replace the former Liverpool and Ajax star for the foreseeable future.

But with Olmo playing mainly as an attacking midfielder or winger, he is no longer seen by the La Liga leaders as a priority signing.
