Barcelona target four signings this summer to overhaul their squad and help Lionel Messi

Ronald de Boer has pointed the finger of accusation at the Argentine international

Their Sunday’s defeat at the Santiago Bernabeu has left the reigning La Liga champions two points adrift of league leaders Real Madrid.

Barcelona are planning to overhaul their squad and strengthen four key positions as they look to make the most out of Lionel Messi’s last few years at the club.

The Camp Nou giants were humbled by Real Madrid in the El Clasico on Sunday as two late goals helped Los Blancos eclipse the Catalan side to the summit of La Liga.

Quique Setien’s side played well in the first half of the game but showcased the thinness of their squad as Zinedine Zidane introduced new faces in the final forty-five minutes.

And if Sport are to be believed, the defeat convinced the higher-ups at the Camp Nou that the club needs four new signings to build a side around their iconic forward.

According to the Spanish news publication, the Camp Nou side want to strengthen their back by bringing in a center-half and right full-back in the summer.

That they want to bring in new faces in the center-back department shouldn’t come as a surprise given that the Catalan side currently has only three center-halves in Gerard Pique, Clement Lenglet, and Samuel Umtiti.

As for their pursuit of a new right-back, Quique Setien’s side are yet to fill the void left by the departure of Dani Alves in 2016. The Brazilian full-back spent eight years at the club and was one of the best right-backs in the world during his time in Spain.

In addition to strengthening their defense, the reigning La Liga champions also want to reinforce their attacking department before the start of next season. The club are looking at two types of players which they intend to sign in the summer.

One of them is who can play out wide, a justifiable pursuit given the horrible injury history of Ousmane Dembele ever since his arrival in Spain from Germany in 2017. Apart from that, Barca are also after a no.9 who can immediately rotate with Luis Suarez and ultimately replace the Uruguayan in their starting XI in the long-run.

Barca might target other signings as well

Vidal sues Barcelona

The report further claims that while the club would try and pursue signings on the four positions come what may, they might also try and lure in a midfielder.

The potential arrival of a new midfielder is likely to happen if Arturo Vidal, who was visibly unhappy over Setien taking him off in the El Clasico, decides to leave the club in the summer.

That is likely to happen given that there were rumors in January that Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte, who managed Vidal during their time together at Bayern Munich, would once again like to join his forces with the Chilean.

However, if Vidal decides against leaving the Camp Nou, the imperious form of Frenkie de Jong and the coming-of-age of Arthur might prevent Barca from pursuing a midfield signing after the end of the ongoing season.
