Chelsea star could be frozen out as manager Frank Lampard seeks replacement

With the Blues keeping only five cleans in the Premier League so far this season, boss Frank Lampard wants the club to sign a new shot-stopper in the upcoming summer transfer window.

Chelsea goalkeeper Kepa Arrizabalaga faces the risk of being frozen out as manager Frank Lampard considers the idea of leaving him on the bench for the remainder of the 19/20 campaign.

The 25-year-old became the most expensive shot-stopper in history when the Stamford Bridge side paid his release clause of £71.6m to sign him from Spanish side Athletic Bilbao last summer.

His first season at the club went according to the plan as the Spaniard managed to keep 14 clean sheets in his first year in English football.

However, after a string of recent errors that forced Lampard to bench Kepa for his side’s 2-2 draw at Leicester, reports claim that the Spain international’s Chelsea future may be in doubt.

Spanish news outlet Cope claims that Kepa might have featured in his last game for the Blues as his manager has begun the search for a new number one.

Following his side’s hard-fought 2-2 draw with the Foxes, the Blues’ boss defended his decision to replace Kepa in favor of the 38-year-old Willy Caballero.

“You make decisions every week and every day in this job. No decision is easy,” he said.

“When it comes to a goalkeeper, you probably do give it a little bit more thought and a bit more time, especially if someone seems to be the designated number one.

“That can’t be the end of the story. We have to be competitive. Willy trains well, he acts well and he played well against Hull last week. I decided to stick with him.”

Why Manchester City are struggling in the Premier League this season

The Spaniard’s form has nosedived this season

After having an excellent maiden season in the Premier League, the Spain national team’s goalkeeper’s form has suffered a nosedived this term.

His poor form has forced Chelsea, who shipped in 39 goals in the whole of last season, to concede 34 already on only 25 league games this time around.

Their form in front of their own goal has been so poor that the Blues have the 2nd worst defense of all the teams currently in the top half of the Premier League table.

His poor form could be gauged from the statistic that the Spain number one has the lowest save percentage of any goalkeeper in the Premier League this campaign.

While it is true that Kepa doesn’t deserve all the blame, as the Blues’ defenders ahead of him have also been not at their best, the string of high-profile errors which the 25-year-old has made makes it difficult for any Blues’ supporter to defend his performances.
