The 22-year-old France international was subbed out after just 25 minutes during Barcelona’s 3-1 win over Borussia Dortmund during the two sides’ midweek Champions League tie.

Barcelona winger Ousmane Dembele is set to be out of action for about 10 weeks after suffering a thigh injury in Wednesday’s Champions League victory over former club Borussia Dortmund, confirms BBC News.

The 22-year-old suffered the injury midway through the first half on Wednesday and was immediately replaced with Antoine Griezmann.

Dembele’s recent injury is the latest of several unfortunate setbacks that the France international has suffered since arriving at the Camp Nou from Dortmund in 2017.

His absence from the squad will be keenly felt as Antoine Griezmann, whom Barca signed to play ahead of him in their starting lineup, has struggled to showcase his form since his summer move from Atletico Madrid.

His ten-week absence will see the 22-year-old miss a lot of crucial games for the La Liga champions who currently have a slender 1-point lead at the top of the La Liga table.

Starting from this weekend’s tie at Atletico Madrid, Dembele will miss out on the rescheduled El Clasico with Real Madrid which is due to take place in the middle of next month.

Apart from these two heavyweight fixtures, Barcelona will be without the Frenchman for their tricky away fixtures against Inter Milan and Espanyol.

The first of these two fixtures, which is due to take place on 11 December, will be a dead rubber as Barcelona have already qualified for the knockout stages of this season’s Champions League. However, the Catalans might crucially miss the former Dortmund winger in their clash at Espanyol which is going to take place at the start of January.

Games Dembele might potentially miss due to injury: Atletico Madrid (A), RCD Mallorca (H), Inter Milan (A), Real Sociedad (A), Real Madrid (H), Alaves (H), Espanyol (A), Atletico Madrid (TBD), Granada (H)

His latest injury means that by the time Dembele will be back in action in the mid of February, the Frenchman will have missed 200 days of action since signing for the club in January 2017.

According to Transfermarkt, the French winger has fallen prey to six injuries in this calendar year alone, including three hamstring injuries, two muscle injuries, and one ankle injury.

That means that of the almost 200 days that Dembele has spent on the treatment table as a Barca player, more than 120 have come in the ongoing year.

The reason why, despite missing so many games, Dembele still finds himself in the starting lineup every time he makes a comeback from injury is the form of Griezmann whom Barcelona signed to play ahead of the former Dortmund man in their side.

With Griezmann managing only 4 goals in his first 12 La Liga appearances for the club, the French winger hasn’t seen the prospect of first-team football fading away from him at the Camp Nou. However, if the former Atletico Madrid forward gets back to his best and sustains it for a definite period, it might well be curtains for his fellow Frenchman at the club.
