The 20-year-old forward can play in any position across the front three

The Catalan side have confirmed the signing of the 20-year-old forward from Portuguese outfit Braga, although he’ll join up with his new teammates in the summer.

Barcelona have signed Francisco Trincao from Portuguese club Braga for €31m, the club confirmed on its official website Thursday.

The Portuguese will spend the last six months of this season in Portugal before joining up with his new teammates at the Camp Nou in the summer.

The 20-year-old forward has signed a five-year contract with the Catalan side, with Barca setting his release clause at an eye-watering €500m.

With only hours remaining until the closure of the January transfer window, the youngster’s signing is expected to be the last one the La Liga giants are going to secure this month.

Before signing for one of the biggest clubs in European football, the 20-year-old had won the Golden Boot award during Portugal’s under 19’s World Championships victory.

Although his favorite position is on the right side of the front-three, Trincao is a versatile player who can also play on the left or as a second striker.

He has made 30 appearances for the senior Braga side since making his debut last season, scoring three goals and providing six assists to his teammates in the process.

The 20-year-old is a brilliant dribbler of the ball and has a fantastic left boot, plus he has the pace as well as the trickery to get away from his markers in no time.

He was earlier scouted by the likes of Arsenal, Wolves and Juventus, with the Serie A leaders seeing their reported €7.5m for the then-teenager turned down by Braga last summer.

Which position will Trincao occupy in the Barcelona side?

With his pace, skill, and finishing making him a handful for opposition defenders, the young Portuguese has played across the front three throughout his nascent career at the senior level.

However, with Messi occupying the right flank at Barca for the foreseeable future and Griezmann playing down the middle, one could expect to see Trincao on the right side of the duo.

The forward’s arrival at the club could be bad news for the likes of Philippe Coutinho and Malcolm, though, as he plays in the same position as his two more experienced teammates.

Coutinho is expected to return to the Camp Nou after a mostly underwhelming season-long loan at Bayern Munich with reports claiming that the La Liga giants might look to offload the Brazilian permanently in the summer.

A similar fate could meet Malcolm once he returns from his season loan loan at Zenit St. Petersburg. The 22-year-old has been unable to impress since securing a dream move to Barca from Ligue 1 side Bordeaux in 2018. And with Luis Suarez also seemingly on his way out of the Camp Nou, Trincao has a golden chance to make his name at Barca for years to come.
