Reports coming out from various English media outlets claim that the 24-year-old is on the verge of joining the European champions in the upcoming January transfer window have come true.

Liverpool have completied the transfer of highly-rated Red Bull Salzburg forward Takumi Minamino in the January transfer window. The Japanse striker is the first additon to the squad of manager Jurgen Klopp in 2020.

The 24-year-old’s age profile, his passing ability, and the fact that he has a release clause of just £7.5m made Minamino a perfect signing for the European champions.

Also, the fact that he hails from Japan will allow Jurgen Klopp’s side to increase their appeal in the Far East, a point which the Reds mooted during their recently concluded kit trial case against current suppliers New Balance.

Throw into the mix his availability to play in the knockout stages of this season’s Champions League, as UEFA changed its rules to remove the cup-tied clause, and Minamino will be able to reinforce Liverpool’s push for multiple trophies this season.

Minamino fits Liverpool’s playing style

The 24-year-old perfectly fits the bill for the current Liverpool side both in terms of his age as well as his physical and technical attributes.

He has been a predominant presence on the right side of RB Salzburg’s attack force this season, scoring nine goals and supplying 11 assists to his teammates in all competitions.

Given that he has played in almost all attacking positions over the course of his career, the arrival of Minamino will undoubtedly offer Klopp a more-than-decent back up of the club’s in-form front three of Sadio Mane, Roberto Firmino and Mohamed Salah.

Even if the Reds’ attacking trio does not show any signs of slowing down, the Japanese’s versatility means that he won’t have to limit himself to warming the Liverpool bench. Klopp could play him on both the left as well as the right side of his defensive midfielder to exploit the forward’s strengths.

That’s mainly because, in addition to his outstanding technique and vision, which were on display when Minamino scored against Liverpool earlier this season, the 24-year-old also has the dribbling skills to leave his rival players chasing shadows.

Klopp is the best manager to oversee Minamino’s development

During his side’s 2-0 defeat at the hands of Liverpool on Tuesday, Minamino covered more distance than any Liverpool player, with the Japanese covering 11.96km over the two halves of football.

Comparing the skills that the Japanese have displayed during his time in Austria with that of Liverpool players whom he’s expected to join in January, it won’t be wrong to say that while Minamino has the work-rate of Jordan Henderson, his guile on the ball resembles that of Roberto Firmino.

Furthermore, with him turning only 25 in 2020, the Japanese is at the right stage in his career to make a switch from one of the lower leagues of Europe, and fewer managers across Europe can rival Klopp when it comes to his record of developing young players into world-beaters.

That shouldn’t be surprising as, during his time at Borussia Dortmund, Klopp was one of the main architects of the careers of Mario Gotze and Robert Lewandowski. The duo was plucked from lower-level clubs by Dortmund before Klopp nurtured their talent to make them household names across Europe.

It looks as if signing Minamino may be a brilliant deal not only for the player but also for the club, both on and off the pitch.
