After a month of difficult negotiations with Sporting Club de Portugal, the Red Devils announced on Wednesday that they have completed the signing of the 25-year-old midfielder.

Manchester United have confirmed the signing of midfielder Bruno Fernandes from Sporting Lisbon after a month of transfer negotiations with the Portuguese club.

The 25-year-old will be joining the Red Devils in a deal worth to be in the region of £46.6m, though add-ons could see the transfer fee rise to £65m.

A statement on the club’s official website reads: “Manchester United is delighted to announce it has reached an agreement with Sporting Clube de Portugal for the transfer of Bruno Fernandes.

“The deal is subject to a medical and the agreement of personal terms. A further announcement will be made in due course.”

During his three-year-long stint with the Portuguese outfit, Fernandes delivered a string of scintillating performances to increase his stock in European football.

The 2018/19 season was by far the best one the midfielder had in Sporting colors as he managed to score 31 goals and provide 13 assists to his teammates.

His brilliant performances saw the Portuguese getting linked with several top European clubs beside Man United last summer, with Tottenham and Real Madrid also reportedly keeping tabs on the midfielder.

The 25-year-old managed to stay put in Portugal and proved his decision right by scoring 8 goals and assisting another 7 in his last six months in the Liga Nos.

Hence the reason why Fernandes has what it takes to justify the transfer fee which has made him the 3rd most expensive signing in the history of Red Devils.

The 25-year-old has been in form this season

In the 4-3-3 system that Ole Gunnar Solskjaer employs at Man United, Fernandes, given his versatility, can play in a multitude of positions.

Apart from his role in the central midfield playing in which Fernandes has shown he can do the most damage, the Portuguese can also play on the wing.

However, given that United has signed him to reinforce their bid for a Champions League spot, they might want him to sit in his ideal position, the pocket behind the forward and find holes in the opposition backline from his advanced attacking role.

Provided Fernandes makes that position his own and puts in some brilliant performances, that would pose a major selection headache to his new manager.

That’s because the currently injured Paul Pogba also plays in the same role where Fernandes put in his best displays for Sporting. The return from injury of the French World Cup winner, therefore, would mean that two of the United best players would be vying for the same position in the starting XI.
