Five strikers Atletico Madrid can sign to replace Diego Costa after terminating his contract

Atletico Madrid announced in a statement earlier today they have reached an agreement with the Spaniard to terminate his contract by mutual consent.

Diego Costa’s departure from Atletico Madrid has raised questions about whether Diego Simeone’s side will try to bring in his replacement next month.

One of the players Atleti could turn to is Napoli striker Arkadiusz Milik. The 26-year-old forward, who will be a free agent next summer, hasn’t played much for Napoli this season and might be available on the cheap should Los Rojiblancos pursue his signature next month.

They could also turn to the Polish international’s Napoli teammate Fernando Llorente. The 35-year-old might be in the twilight stage of his playing career but Atletico could turn to Llorente in case they’re looking for a stop-gap replacement for Costa.

Provided neither of the two options prove appealing enough to Diego Simeone’s side, they could then set their sights on Inter Milan forward Ivan Perisic. The Croatian has fallen down the pecking order at San Siro since his loan spell at Bayern Munich and might be available for only €15m next month.

However, if Atleti are wary of going too far in their search for the replacement of Costa, they could turn their attentions closer to home. Real Betis striker Loren Meron, 27, is one player they could turn to in their quest to find a reliable backup to Joao Felix and Luiz Suarez.

Espanyol’s Raul De Tomas, who is currently valued by his side at around €10m, is another forward who could be on the move next month. The onus then is on Atleti and their manager Simeone to decide whether to immediately replace Costa or wait until the summer before bringing in his replacement.

Where will Diego Costa end up?

The Spain international might decide to rejoin Chelsea next month. Frank Lampard’s side are struggling for goals this season and the return of Diego Costa to the Chelsea line up might help the Blues overcome their woes in front of the opposition’s goal.

However, if the Spaniard decides against returning to London, he might be better served with a move to Everton. Carlo Ancelotti has shown with his handling of James Rodriguez that he could help out-of-favor superstars reignite their careers and there’s no reason why he could do so with Costa. Arsenal are another side linked with the player in the past few hours.
