The Red Devils were finally able to secure the signing of ex-Watford striker Odion Ighalo who joined the club on a six-month loan from Chinese Super League outfit Shanghai Shenhua.

Manchester United were linked with five strikers in the recently concluded January transfer window before they eventually snapped up Nigeria international Odion Ighalo on the deadline day.

The Red Devils spent the better part of the month negotiating a deal with Sporting Lisbon for midfielder Bruno Fernandes before eventually securing his services on Thursday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s attention then turned to secure the signature of a striker as Marcus Rashford’s back injury has left his side short of options in the attacking department.

The England international’s injury might keep him out of action for four months and forced United to look for short-term options as they push for Champions League qualification.

As we had reported a few days earlier, the Old Trafford side were keen to secure the services of their academy graduate King from Premier League strugglers Bournemouth last month.

The negotiations reached such an advanced stage that both the clubs had reportedly agreed on the transfer fee of the player, though Bournemouth were adamant that they’d only let King leave if they had already secured his replacement.

That didn’t happen, and Solskjaer, who is a massive fan of the 28-year-old after working with him in 2011 for a brief period at United reserves, was forced to look for other options.

One of the other options were Norwich City striker Teemu Pukki. Mirror Football reports that the Finland international was on United’s transfer radar after they missed out on King.

However, with the Canaries sitting at the bottom of the league table, they didn’t agree to let their top-scorer leave the Carrow Road midway through the season.

Edinson Cavani looked to be on the verge of completing a £15m move to La Liga outfit Atletico Madrid before his PSG manager Thomas Tuchel called the transfer dead on the deadline day.

The Uruguay international was one of several names linked with Man United, though their transfer interest in the ex-Napoli man never matched those of Diego Simeone’s Atletico.

Southampton’s Danny Ings was another striker United tried but failed to sign last month. The Saints outrightly told United that the former Liverpool striker, who has scored 14 goals in 24 league appearances already this season, was not for sale.

Leicester City flop Islam Slimani who seems to have found his scoring boot after securing a season-long loan move to Ligue 1 outfit AS Monaco was another striker who was linked with a move to Old Trafford.

Tottenham were also interested in the Algerian international but with Monaco demanding €2.5m to cut his loan short by six months, neither of the two Premier League clubs made any further move to secure his signature.
