Harry Maguire tweeted a message of defiance after Man United‘s drab goalless draw at AZ Alkmaar, but he deleted it after receiving a backlash from angry fans.

The world’s most expensive defender didn’t feature in United’s dour performance in Netherlands as manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer went with a center-back pairing of Victor Lindelof and Marcos Rojo.

That pair, as well as goalkeeper David de Gea, all did their jobs to perfection as AZ Alkmaar weren’t able to break the deadlock despite having four shots on target.

The Red devils, by contrast, were poor in an already average game  at the AFAS Stadion as they failed to manage a single shot on target throughout the 90-minutes on Thursday.

United fans didn’t respond kindly to their team’s performance as Man United became only the 3rd team in the Europa League this season who have come out of a game without having a single shot on target.

Taking to Twitter after the game, the Man United defender tried to emphasized the importance of winning a point away from home, though he was forced to delete the message after receiving backlash from supporters.

Early Friday, Maguire had tweeted: “A point away from home. Thanks for the support. See you Sunday.”

While the England defender was reluctant to look on the dark side of life, some United fans were quick to remind him of the level the club has fallen to in the post-Alex Ferguson era.

Thursday’s draw at AZ Alkmaar means that the Red devils have now failed to win a game away from home since March, a run which extends to 10 games in all competitions.

The last time United were able to win on the road was way back in March when they came from behind to get a resounding 3-1 victory over Paris Saint-Germain in the Champions League pre-quarter finals.

Solskjaer remains defiant

Despite seeing his team not able to win on the road at the 10th time of asking, Ole Gunnar Solskjaer was in a defiant mood at the post-match press conference on Thursday night.

“It’s a good point away from home against difficult opponents on a difficult surface.” said the United manager.

“They beat Feyenoord 3-0 away from home, we made many changes and so I’m very pleased.

“I’m pleased with the boys, the debut of Brandon Williams, you can’t see any nerves, so brave, with the courage to take the ball forward, so that’s a big, big plus.”

United have a huge chance of getting that first away win since March as they travel to face a Newcastle side which was trounced 5-0 by Leicester City last weekend.
