How Barcelona could line up against Cadiz

Key Facts

  • Lionel Messi is expected to lead the line for Barcelona when they host Cadiz at the Camp Nou in La Liga on Sunday
  • The Argentina international is currently 2nd on the La Liga goalscoring charts, having scored 15 goals in 20 Spanish top-flight appearances
  • Barca will be looking to avenge the 2-1 defeat that Cadiz handed them when both the sides met earlier this season

Here’s how Barcelona could lineup against Cadiz on Sunday:

Both Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet endured a nightmarish 90-minute spell against PSG in midweek. The former’s night was emblematic of the now famous picture in which he’s holding Kylian Mbappe’s shirt to try in vain to stop the French playmaker.

Lenglet, meanwhile, could have done better for PSG’s opener. The Frenchman was caught flat-footed by his country-mate Mbappe, who used his quick thinking and even quicker feet to defeat him in a one-on-one situation before slotting the ball home.

However, with Ronald Araujo still recovering from the ankle injury he sustained against Real Betis and Samuel Umtiti not in his best form, Ronald Koeman has no choice but to stick with the duo on Sunday. Sergino Dest and Jordi Alba are also expected to retain their places on the wings.

Frenkie de Jong wasn’t the only Barca player who had a horror show against PSG at the weekend. Yet the problems he faced as an individual while trying to counter the amazing Marco Verratti were the microcosm of what Barca as a team faced on Wednesday.

Barca fans would hope that it was just a bad day at the office for their young Dutchman, who would have the chance to prove that it was just that against Cadiz. He’s expected to be joined in the center of midfield by Pedri, with the veteran Sergio Busquets playing just behind the duo.

Messi made an unwanted record the last time both these teams met in La Liga in December. The Argentine lost the ball 29 times during that game and was one of Barcelona’s most underwhelming players as Cadiz handed the Camp Nou outfit a shock 2-1 defeat that day.

Much has changed since then for both Messi and Barca. The Catalan giants haven’t lost a league game since then and are coming into this clash on a seven-game winning run in all competitions, with Messi scoring eleven goals in 12 games since his horror show vs Cadiz.

Possible Barca starting XI Vs Cadiz: Ter Stegen; Dest, Pique, Lenglet, Alba; Busquets, Pedri, De Jong; Trincao, Messi, Griezmann
