The 24-year-old has 7 goals and 6 assists so far this season

Following United’s failed effort to sign the 24-year-old, Grealish has gone on to cement his reputation as one of the finest English midfielders in the Premier League.

Former Aston Villa manager Alex McLeish has revealed Man United tried and failed to sign Jack Grealish back when the England international was only a schoolboy in 2012.

The 24-year-old came through the youth-ranks of Villa Park residents and made his debut for the senior side during a 3-1 away defeat at MK Dons in 2013.

Grealish was a regular part of the Villa side that was relegated to the Championship at the end of 2015/16 season after finishing at the bottom of the Premier League.

His performances in the next couple of years that his side spent in the second-tier of English football were instrumental in helping the Villans earn promotion back to the Premier League at the end of 2018/19 season.

His former boss McLeish, who included Grealish in Villa’s matchday squad aged 16, has unveiled the efforts United made back in 2012 to acquire the midfielder’s services.

McLeish said: “We concocted getting him on the bench against Chelsea just to give him a taste.

“But the next month on the same day the first team were at Old Trafford, Jack and an agent were seen at Rio Ferdinand's restaurant that night.

“I am sure Jack was really happy being wanted by other massive teams, but you knew his heart was at Villa. It was just a case of sorting out a suitable package.”

“Maybe it was unprecedented money we were giving to an academy kid. But it has turned out to be a great bit of business for Aston Villa.”

Since helping his team recover their Premier League status, the 24-year-old has made a name for himself by putting in a string of brilliant performances in the ongoing 2019/20 campaign.

The central midfielder who is known for his ability to thread passes between the opposition defenders has scored 7 goals and assisted another 6 already this season.

His wonderful performances have once again caught the attention of the Red Devils who want to secure the England international’s services before the summer, as per Manchester Evening News.

The Old Trafford residents are aware that his performances in the Euro 2020 might further inflate the midfielder’s price tag and are therefore adamant of getting the deal over the line before the start of this summer’s competition.
