- Real Madrid will be looking to put their injury crisis behind them when they take on Atalanta in the sides’ first leg Champions League R-16 clash on Wednesday
- Zinedine Zidane’s side are coming into this clash with eight of the first-team players on the injury treatment table
- Top-scorer Karim Benzema is the latest Los Blancos player to go down after the Frenchman’s injury at the weekend ruled him out from action
Here’s how Real Madrid are expected to line up Vs Atalanta on Wednesday:
Los Blancos will be traveling to Italy without the likes of Sergio Ramos, Marcelo, Eder Militao and Daniel Carjaval in their traveling contingent. That leaves little space for Zidane to tweak his side or rest those who played at the weekend.
Which means that both Raphael Varane and Nacho are expected to form a center-back pairing on Wednesday evening, with the winger-turned-full-back Lucas Vazquez on the right and Ferland Mendy marshalling the left side of Madrid’s defense.
Real Madrid’s injury crisis isn’t limited to their defensive department, as injuries to the likes of Federico Valverde show. However, the devastation isn’t as serious, with the likes of Toni Kroos, Casemiro and Luka Modric all declared fit to play against Atalanta.
All three of them have started 59 games between them already this season, with the 35-year-old Modric defying his age by starting 21 games for Los Blancos in all competitions this season.
With the trio of Hazard, Benzema and Rodrygo still on the treatment table, Zidane has no choice but to go with the untested trio of Marco Asensio, Mariano Diaz and Vinicius Jr. on Wednesday. The trio haven’t played together before and it remains to be seen how they would perform as a unit.
Real Madrid possible starting lineup vs Atalanta: Courtois; Vazquez, Varane, Nacho, Mendy; Casemiro, Kroos, Modric; Asensio, Diaz, Vinicius Jr
