Jordan Pickford makes another wild challenge, Solskjaer hits out at Premier League and more

The Everton shot-stopper was also on fault for the rash tackle that effectively ended Liverpool centre-back Virgil van Dijk’s season during last month’s Merseyside derby.

Jordan Pickford has once again courted controversy after he wildly kicked Manchester United captain Harry Maguire inside his penalty area.

The Everton shot-stopper, who attracted the ire of Liverpool fans last month by rushing into a challenge that damaged the anterior cruciate ligament of Virgil van Dijk, once again showed his wild side in his side’s 3-1 defeat to the Red Devils on Saturday evening.

Pickford spilled the ball from a benign-looking United cross and Maguire tried to make the most of the goalkeeper’s mistake by getting in front of the 26-year-old before trying to nudge the ball towards the goal. But as he tried to rectify his error, Pickford swung his lung straight into Maguire who fell after being kicked with some force.

However, despite the clear foul on his fellow England international, Pickford once again got lucky as neither the on-field referee nor the VAR took a dim view of his challenge, consequently letting the shot-stopper get away with another potentially dangerous challenge.

Although his side ended their 2-game losing streak in all competitions with a well-deserved victory over the Toffees, the Red Devils’ boss was furious with his team’s schedule.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has blasted Premier League higher-ups for setting up his Manchester United side ‘to fail’ by handing them a hectic fixture schedule, despite the Red Devils’ victory at Everton.

United came from behind after an early Bernard goal for the home side threatened to leave their manager’s job on the line, with a Bruno Fernandes’ brace and injury-time Edinson Cavani goal lifting the Old Trafford outfit to within six points of leaders Liverpool.

However, speaking in his post-match press conference, Solskjaer claimed that the high-volume of fixtures has exposed his players to injuries. The Norwegian also claimed that it was United’s hectic schedule that resulted in Luke Shaw injuring his hamstring during Saturday’s game.

Solskjaer further revealed that Marcus Rashford might also be struggling, before adding that he’d have preferred to play on Sunday after their Europa League clash with Turkish outfit Istanbul Basaksehir on Wednesday night.

Top News 3: Messi comes off the bench to help Barcelona down Betis

After failing to win their last four games in the Spanish top-flight, Barcelona kicked off their Saturday’s clash with Real Betis with the Argentine on the bench.

Lionel Messi came off the bench to score a brace and help set up another goal as Barcelona ended their four-game winless in La Liga with a 5-2 victory over 10-man Real Betis.

The 33-year-old forward, who was named among substitutes for the first time since 2019, was deemed “not fresh” to start Saturday’s game from the kickoff by Ronald Koeman’s assistant Alfred Schreuder, who claimed after the game that the Argentina superstar simply isn’t at peak fitness.

Messi was subbed on at half time after Antonio Sanabria cancelled out an early Ousmanne Dembele strike to leave the match at 1-1 at half time. He immediately made his presence count by paving the way for Antoine Griezmann to score his 2nd goal of the top-flight campaign.

The Argentina superstar then converted a penalty that came Barcelona’s way after Aissa Mandi was sent off for handling the ball on the line and scored his 2nd goal of the night late on to destroy Betis’ hopes of a comeback following Loren Moron’s strike.
