Jurgen Klopp was reportedly impressed by what he saw from the 24-year-old during the two matches Liverpool played against RB Salzburg in the group stages of this season’s Champions League.

Liverpool are ready to try and sign Takumi Minamino from Austrian outfit Red Bull Salzburg in the January transfer window, as per The Times.

The Japanese international impressed the Reds’ boss Jurgen Klopp during the two times he featured for his club against Liverpool in this season’s Champions League.

What is perhaps more interesting to note is that despite his brilliant performances in both domestic and European competitions this season, Minamino has a release clause of just £7.25 million.

The potential arrival of the Champions League-bound player at the Merseyside would no doubt help the reigning European champions reinforce their bid for the first Premier League title in almost 30 years.

The Times further reports that it is the Reds’ boss Jurgen Klopp who is urging the club to secure the services of the 24-year-old next month.

The former Borussia Dortmund manager is reportedly thrilled by the player’s pace, his ability to pick a pass from his attacking midfield role and confidence in possession.

Minamino was on the score-sheet as RB Salzburg threatened to derail Liverpool’s ongoing Champions League campaign by coming back from behind to level the game 3-3 at Anfield, before a late Mohamed Salah goal salvaged the day for the Reds.

In his role in the attacking midfield of Salzburg, his coach has deployed Minamino in multiple positions, including on either side of the striker and also as a part of a two-pronged strike force, thereby underlining his versatility in multiple positions.

Ian Doyle further notes in his report for The Times that having seen him perform brilliantly against the Reds, some senior Liverpool players recommended Minamino to the club’s coaching staff.

However, it isn’t only his performances in the two legs against the Reds that have forced Klopp to ask Liverpool to accelerate their transfer push for the forward in January.

The German manager, it is reported, has been tracking the progress of the Japanese international before the start of his season due to his fascination with the football empire Red Bull Salzburg has constructed to nurture young talent.

Sadio Mane and Naby Keita both came through the ranks of the same system before going on to make their names in bigger clubs across Europe. There’s no reason why, if Minamino does end up g to the Merseyside, he cannot follow in the footsteps of the duo.
