Manchester City have joined rivals Manchester United in the race to sign Real Madrid star Martin Odegaard, with Arsenal also after the signature of the 20-year-old, as per reports

The Premier League champions are looking for a long-term replacement for midfielder David Silva who will leave the club at the end of the current season.

Pep Guardiola believes that the Norwegian starlet, who rejected the likes of Liverpool and Manchester United to join Los Blancos in 2015, has what it takes to run City’s midfield for years to come.

The Spanish news outlet El Desmarque has claimed that the former Barcelona manager has been keeping tabs on the midfielder’s development for quite some time.

It further reports that the City boss has been impressed by what he has seen so far and remains keen to make the midfielder a member of his squad in the coming years.

Odegaard is currently on loan at Real Sociedad

After rejecting offers from the likes of Manchester United and Liverpool, Odegaard joined Real Madrid Castilla in the summer of 2015, where he played for two years before making his senior debut for the club in 2017.

His time as a senior player was far from ideal for the 20-year-old. He made only 1 appearance for the club during his 2-season spell with the senior side, before being eventually loaned out to Dutch side Heerenveen.

After failing to impress during the loan-spell, Real Madrid once again sent the midfielder out on loan, with the Dutch sid Vitesse Arnhem becoming the new home of the player.

The 2nd loan spell proved to be more productive than the first one as Odegaard managed a respectable 8 goals in his 31 appearances for the Dutch side during the 2018/19 campaign.

Odegaard is currently on loan at La Liga outfit Real Sociedad. The 20-year-old has shown brilliant form so far this season as he has already managed 2 goals in his first 6 appearances for the new club.

For a player who won’t turn 21 till December this year, the Norwegian has already attracted plenty of fame during his short career as a professional footballer.

Much of the fame which he enjoys owes to the performances given by the 20-year-old before he signed for Real Madrid in 2015, as his performances since then have been nothing short of disappointing.

That hasn’t stopped the likes of Man City, Man United and Arsenal to pursue the player’s signature. All three of the club feels that if given proper game time, the Norwegian can still fulfil his potential.

Given his young age, that claim has its merits. The Norwegian might be only 20 but he already has 2 full seasons of senior level football under his belt, a sign that he has what it takes to be an early learner.

Still, despite their interest in the player, none of the Premier League clubs are expected to make their move next summer, as Odegaard will still have a year remaining on his two-year loan contract which he signed with Real Sociedad earlier this year.
