Despite the fact that the Uruguayan will be turning 35 next February, United are reportedly keeping tabs on his situation at the San Siro.

Manchester United are eyeing a summer transfer for Diego Godin amid reports claiming that the former Atletico Madrid defender has fallen out of favor with Inter Milan boss Antonio Conte.

Godin was considered one of the best defenders in world football during his decade long stay in Spain where he helped Atletico Madrid put up one of the meanest defenses in Europe.

His time in Madrid saw Diego Simeone’s side boast one of the best defensive records in European football as they used their defensive prowess to claim the 2013/14 La Liga title.

However, since moving to Italy last summer, the Uruguayan has seen limited game time as his relationship with former Chelsea manager Conte has seen Godin relegated to the sidelines of the Nerazzurri squad fighting for the Scudetto this season.

Due to his poor relationship with his manager, Godin has started only 12 of Inter’s 25 games in the Italian top-flight this campaign.

The circumstances which the player finds himself in at the San Siro has convinced United to once again try and convince the player to move to the Old Trafford.

United have been long-term admirers of the 34-year-old and has previously made attempts to sign him in an effort to strengthen their ailing backline.

Italian publication Corriere dello Sport claims that the Premier League giants are once again trying to sign the player they believe will provide wisdom to the current crop of defenders at the club.

The Old Trafford’s side’s reported chase of Godin faces competition from La Liga outfit Valencia who are also reportedly chasing the veteran defender.

Godin to consider his options in the summer

Given the fact that the playing style of Conte’s teams is similar to that of Simeone’s, it has come as a surprise to many that Godin has struggled under the tutelage of the Italian.

Godin’s best performances for the Nerazzurri have come in the Europa League, with the Uruguayan winning WhoScored’s Man of the Match award due to his performance against Ludogorets in the first leg of R32 clash between the two sides last month.

However, as Football Italia reports [quoting AS], the 34-year-old was brought to the club to play an essential role in their Serie A campaign. That hasn’t happened as the central defender has been benched eight times in the league this term.

As a result of his underwhelming situation at the club, the ex Atletico Madrid center half, who moved to Italy on a three-year deal last summer,  will reportedly consider his options when the transfer window reopens.
