Man United make decision on youngster Timothy Fosu-Mensah’s future

The Red Devils have decided to extend his contract by one year just a few months before the defender was about to run out of his current deal with the club.

Manchester United have reportedly decided to activate the one-year extension clause in youngster Timothy Fosu-Mensah’s contract with the club.

The 22-year-old has seen himself fall down the pecking order at Old Trafford following the arrival of Aaron Wan-Bissaka from Crystal Palace last season.

Wan-Bissaka has emerged as one of the best right-backs in England, with his partnership with youngster Brandon Williams giving United a solid pairing at the defensive flanks.

However, with the club not having many back-up options to the England international, they have decided to extend the youngster’s stay at the side by one more year.

According to a report by Manchester Evening News, United have decided to activate the automatic extension clause in Mensah’s £20,000-a-week contract with the club.

The Dutch right back has been unable to make an impression for the Red Devils after injuring his knee ligament while playing on loan for Fulham last season.

He was subsequently ruled out for almost a year before making his return for United’s Under-23s against Stoke City at the start of March.

The 22-year-old is yet to make an appearance for United in any competition since the 2016/17 season, with the youngster spending a majority of the last four years on loan first at Crystal Palace and then at Championship side Fulham.

Fosu-Mensah’s contract extension follows a pattern

Prior to the youngster receiving a new deal from the club, the Red Devils already extended the stays of both Eric Bailly and Nemanja Matic at Old Trafford.

Bailly, who has spent the majority of this season out injured, saw United activate the two-year extension clause in the deal he signed with the club upon arrival from Villarreal in the summer of 2016.

Matic’s contract extension surprised the United faithful who were expecting manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer to adopt the same ruthless attitude towards the Serbian with which he sent the likes of Ashley Young packing in January.

As it stands, youngster Angel Gomes is the only first-team player on the club’s payroll who would be without a contract at the end of this season.
