Man United transfer news: Deal for Lyon ace ‘secured’, Jadon Sancho backup identified and more

After starting his career with Fulham in the Championship, the 23-year-old winger moved to Celtic before securing a move to Lyon in 2018.

Manchester United have ‘secured a total agreement’ with Lyon for the transfer of £61.8m rated Moussa Dembele to Old Trafford in the summer, reports Todofichajes [via The Express].

The Red Devils are on the hunt for a striker in the summer transfer window as they seek to permanently replace Romelu Lukaku who left the club for Inter Milan last year.

Chelsea were also interested in the Frenchman’s acquisition but have reportedly been beaten by the Old Trafford giants to the punch. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are set to splash an eye-watering €70m on Dembele who has scored 42 goals in 88 appearances for the Ligue 1 outfit.

The report further claims that Lyon, who were initially reluctant to let their prized asset leave the club, have been forced by their circumstances to cash in on the winger. The curtailment of the 2019/20 Ligue 1 campaign has taken a major hit at the club’s finances and forced them to sell Dembele.

In one of the most surprising Man United transfer news of the day, the Red Devils have reportedly looked at alternatives to the England international.

Man United have identified Schalke’s Rabbi Matondo as the club’s fallback transfer target if they fail to sign Jadon Sancho in the summer, reports Manchester Evening News.

The report claims that Matondo, 19, has been on the transfer radar of United for quite some time. It further adds that the Old Trafford giants see him as a more efficient option if Borussia Dortmund refuse to lower their valuation of Jadon Sancho.

United’s hand in their pursuit of Matondo might further be strengthened by the weak financial situation of Schalke following the coronavirus crisis. There is a prevailing belief that the Bundesliga outfit has to sell players to make up for the revenue it has lost due to the pandemic.

Matondo and Sancho are set to come face-to-face in this Saturday’s Gelsenkirchen derby between Dortmund and Schalke. Both the fierce rivals will face each other in what is going to be German top-flight’s first fixture since the global health crisis forced its suspension back in March.

The soon-to-be Barcelona forward had his Man United shirt number picked before the news that he had opted in favor of a move to the Camp Nou emerged.

Manchester United great Paul Scholes has told BBC that Brazilian superstar Ronaldinho was on the verge of signing for the Old Trafford giants before the transfer collapsed.

United had sold David Beckham to Real Madrid in acrimonious circumstances in 2003 and were ready to splash the cash to bring his replacement at the club.

They were so confident of getting Ronaldinho that United had arranged the presentation in which they were going to unveil the Brazilian and had also picked his shirt number.

However, after a phone call from the then Barcelona president Sandro Rossel to the Brazilian, Ronaldinho changed his heart and ended up signing for Barcelona in a £25m deal.
