Man Utd considering Europa League team changes, Man City defender targeted by Barcelona and more news

After qualifying for next season’s Champions League by finishing 3rd in the English top-flight, the Red Devils are considering making team changes in the remainder of their Europa League campaign.

Manchester United are considering resting several key members of the squad in the remainder of their Europa League campaign, reports Manchester Evening News.

The Red Devils are set to face LASK in the second leg of their last-16 clash in the competition. Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side are favorites to go through from the tie after they dismantled the Austrian outfit 5-0 in the first leg in March.

Only five days separate United’s home clash with LASK and their potential quarter-final clash with Copenhagen or Istanbul Basaksehir. The semi-final follows six days later on August 16 and the final of the 2019/20 Europa League is scheduled on August 21.

That means that less than there will be only 22 days between the final of Europe’s 2nd elite club competition and the start of the 2020/21 Premier League campaign, which is scheduled to kick off on September 12.

With Samuel Umtiti’s Barcelona career reportedly on the ropes, the Camp Nou outfit have turned their attention towards England to bring in a new center-half.

Barcelona have made young Manchester City center-half Eric Garcia their top transfer target for the ongoing summer transfer window, reports Goal.

The 19-year-old Spanish center-back came through the youth ranks of Barcelona before being snapped up by the Citizens three years ago. His stock has continued to rise during his time in England as Garcia has broken into Man City’s first team on numerous occasions this season.

He has moved ahead of the likes of John Stones and Nicolas Otamendi in the pecking order at the Etihad Stadium since Project Restart and may start alongside Aymeric Laporte in City’s crucial Champions League R-16 2nd leg clash with Real Madrid next week.

But with rumors claiming that the defender is reluctant to agree to a contract extension with Pep Guardiola’s outfit beyond 2022, the Catalans have reportedly identified him as the long-term successor to club legend Gerard Pique.

Although both the side already have able deputies to their first-choice goalkeepers, that hasn’t stopped them from going toe-to-toe in their pursuit of the 17-year-old shot-stopper.

Arsenal and Liverpool are set to battle for the signing of 17-year-old Dutch goalkeeper Ricardo van der Laan, reports Portuguese news outlet O Jogo.

The teenage shot-stopper came onto the radar with his performances for Portuguese outfit Beleneses’ youth team earlier this season. He has since then earned a step-up to the Liga NOS outfit’s under-23 team.

Aside from his meteoric rise through the club’s ranks, it is the contract situation of the teenager that has put several clubs on alert. The youngster has just a year remaining on his Beleneses contract and his side are facing a tough task convincing him to extend his stay in Portugal.

Pedro Ribeiro’s side narrowly escaped relegation in the recently concluded 2019/20 season, finishing the campaign at 15th spot, and are unlikely to challenge the likes of Benfica and FC Porto for domestic silverware next season as well.
