Manchester City have confirmed on their Twitter account that defender Ayemeric Laporte has undergone surgery after picking up an injury in his team’s last weekend’s clash against Brighton.

The 25-year-old French centre-back injured his knee and was subsequently stretchered off after a challenge with Brighton player Adam Webster last Saturday.

The injury and the resulting knee surgery means that Laporte, who was called up to join the French squad for the first time in his career, faces a lengthy spell on the sidelines.

His prolonged absence could pose a major headache to manager Pep Guardiola who decided not to bring-in a replacement of the outgoing Vincent Kompany in the recently concluded summer transfer window.

After days of speculation regarding the extent of the injury Laporte suffered on Saturday, Manchester City gave an update on their Twitter account today (Wednesday).

It reads: “Aymeric Laporte has undergone surgery on his knee after damaging his cartilage and lateral meniscus during Saturday’s win over Brighton. The surgery, carried out by Dr Ramon Cugat in Barcelona, was successful and a more detailed prognosis will be provided in due course.

“Everyone at City wishes Aymeric a full and speedy recovery.” concludes the statement which all but confirms that the defender will be out for long.

The recent statement given by the club confirms the fear which Pep Guardiola stated when he was asked to comment on Laporte injjury in the aftermath of the Brighton game.

‘I think he is in hospital. It doesn’t look good but I don’t know exactly what he has done. He didn’t feel good. I think, for a while, he will be out.”

Laporte injury is a big blow for Manchester City

Since he signed for the club in the winter transfer window of 2018, Laporte has played more minutes for the club than any other defender.

While at that time City could afford to ignore the importance of the French defender to the team – since they had Vincent Kompany as the backup – the departure of the Belgian this summer means that Laporte, alongside Nicolas Otamendi, was one of the only two centre-backs which City have at their disposal this season.

His importance to the Manchester City team could be gauged from the fact that ever since he made his debut for the club, Laporte has made more tackles (54), blocked more shots (10) and completed more clearances (130) than any other City defender.

Furthermore, like the Barcelona defender Gerard Pique, Laporte enjoys supreme control on the ball. The 3,820 passes which he has attempted so far in his Manchester City career dwarfs those of his Manchester City teammates.

Impressively, despite playing so many passes, Laporte isn’t a fan of sideways taps. Instead, more than 450 of his passes have not only broken the opposition’s line of defense but have also ended up in their final third – yet another area where Laporte is head-and-shoulders above his colleagues.

Consequently, with him out of action for at least 4 months, Pep Guardiola faces an unenviable task of replacing the irreplaceable Frenchman.
