Pep Guardiola’s men will be hoping to hand Carlo Ancelotti his first defeat as Everton manager when the two sides collide at the Etihad Stadium on Wednesday.

Manchester City will be hoping to get another three points in the bag as they welcome Everton at the Etihad in the New Year’s Day clash.

The reigning Premier League champions have fallen 14 points behind league leaders Liverpool despite having played a game more, with their recent form of two defeats in the last five games giving plenty of headaches to the City faithful.

Everton, on the contrary, have seen the feel-good factor return to the club following the appointment of Carlo Ancelotti at the start of December.

The former Real Madrid and Chelsea manager has started his managerial career at the Merseyside in brilliant fashion, with Everton winning both of their opening games under his rein and moving up to 10th in the Premier League table.

Team news of both sides

The home side will be able to welcome Ederson back into the side following his one-game suspension after receiving a straight red card during City’s defeat at Wolves last week.

Guardiola faces a call between Gabriel Jesus and Sergio Aguero for Wednesday’s clash. Jesus was fit enough to make it to the substitutes’ bench on Sunday and is expected to start here as his boss might look to rotate the squad to keep everybody fresh.

The absence of Aymeric Laporte and John Stones means that Man City are expected to go with the same central-defensive pairing of Nicholas Otamendi and Fernandinho that kept a clean-sheet during their 2-0 victory over Sheffield United at the weekend.

Carlo Ancelotti has a much bigger injury list to contend with than his Man City counterpart, with the likes of Alex Iwobi, Andre Gomes, Jean-Philippe Gbamin and Cuco Martina all ruled out for his side’s Wednesday’s trip to the Etihad.

Their continued absence would allow the Italian to nominate almost the same starting XI that won at the weekend, though ex-City player Fabian Delph is expected to be given a starting berth alongside Gylfi Sigurdsson in the middle of the Blues’ midfield.

Prediction and potential starting lineups

Richarlison might be the key player during Manchester City Vs Everton

Given how both these teams have fared in the past few weeks, it isn’t unthinkable to imagine a scenario in which Everton would go back from this fixture with at least a point in the bag.

Apart from the form which the Blues have shown since the arrival of their new manager, the defensive worries of their hosts Man City should give the Everton faithful plenty of reasons to be hopeful ahead of the New Year’s Day clash.

The center-back pairing of Otamendi and Fernandinho, despite starting a number of games together this season, has failed to breed confidence and might be in for a strong test if Dominic Calvert-Lewin and Richarlison decide to up the tempo on Wednesday.

Possible Manchester City starting lineup vs Everton: Ederson; Walker, Otamendi, Fernandinho, Zinchenko; Bruyne, Rodrigo, Gundogan; Mahrez, Jesus, Sterling

Possible Everton starting lineup vs Manchester City: Pickford; Coleman, Mina, Keane; Sidibe, Delph, Sigurdsson, Digne; Bernard; Richarlison, Calvert-Lewin
