How bad is Manchester United’s form since the permanent appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as manager

The Red Devils suffered their 3rd defeat in 8 Premier League games at the St. James Park on Sunday as a Newcastle United victory saw their hosts just 2 points off relegation places.

Manchester United have the 17th-best record in the Premier League since the permanent appointment of Ole Gunnar Solskjaer as their manager.

Sunday’s defeat at relegation battling Newcastle means United, who spent north of 100m on new signings in the summer, are still waiting for their first away win on the road since March.

Their record of four victories, five stalemates, and six losses translates to a pitiful 17 points from 16 games since Solskjaer was handed the Man United job full time in March.

Unsurprisingly, that is relegation form. Only Southampton, Brighton and Watford are the teams who have put fewer points on the board during that time.

United’s poor form under Solskjaer

With 8 matches of the season under their belt, Manchester United have accumulated only nine points, equaling their worst start to a season in well over 3 decades.

Their poor form since the permanent appointment of the Norwegian wasn’t seen by many as United had won 14 of the 19 matches with Solskjaer in the caretaker manager role.

Since then, however, it has all been downhill for the 20-time Premier League champions, with fans who were once urging the club to make the Norwegian’s stay permanent at Old Trafford now calling for his head.

Their only league victories since March have come against Watford and West Ham last season, and Chelsea and Leicester in the early months of this one.

In the opening three months of the 19-20 campaign, United have already tasted defeats at the hands of Crystal Palace, West Ham, and Newcastle United, teams which one expects them to beat.

Manchester United’s next game in the league comes against league leaders Liverpool, a side which has won more points in the last six games than United have in the last six months.

Since the appointment of Solskjaer at their hated rivals, Jurgen Klopp’s men have won all 15 of their games in the league, with the return of 45 points almost three times that of United’s.

Manchester City aren’t far behind these days when it comes to piling misery on their red neighbors, with Pep Guardiola’s side winning 40 points in that period.

Solskjaer was honest in his post-match assessment on Sunday as he accepted that United face a difficult task of finishing the season among the top six sides of this campaign.

However, as the post-Sir Alex Ferguson history of Old Trafford club has shown, it isn’t honesty but results on the pitch which the 46-year-old needs to extend his stay at the club.
