The 24-year-old hasn't scored or assisted a goal in any club competition this season

The Red Devils’ officials met with the French midfielder’s representatives earlier this week as the club looks to make the most of the unforeseen break in the football campaign.

Manchester United have made contact with Thomas Lemar as the club tries to sign the Atletico Madrid winger during the summer transfer window.

The current suspension of football hasn’t deterred the Red Devils from their efforts of strengthening their squad ahead of the 2020/21 campaign.

ESPN reports that the representatives of the French midfielder met with United’s representatives late last week and negotiations might still go on as the football season remains suspended across Europe due to the coronavirus pandemic.

The report further claims that with his style of play not fitting well with that of Diego Simeone’s side, the French winger wants to leave the club in the summer.

Lemar, who is still only 24, was on United’s transfer radar after bursting through the scene with his impressive performances for Ligue 1 outfit AS Monaco during the 2016/17 season.

Lemar managed to score 14 goals and provided 18 assists to his teammates in the Ligue 1 that season and helped AS Monaco break the monopoly of Paris Saint-Germain over French football.

The Frenchman was linked to the likes of Liverpool and Arsenal back then but ended up moving to the Spanish capital for €70m a year later.

Lemar is having a torrid time in Spain

His first two seasons in La Liga hasn’t gone according to plan, with the ongoing campaign going especially dreadful for Lemar.

Despite making 24 appearances for the Rojiblancos in all competitions so this term, the 24-year-old is yet to score a goal or provide an assist since the start of the campaign

Hence the reason why with over three months still left on his current contract, the World Cup winner is reportedly prepared to bid farewell to Wanda Metropolitana in the summer.

The report claims that the player feels he is ill-suited to his manager’s pragmatic style of play, with Atleti also allegedly willing to listen to offers to get him off their wage bill.
