Manchester United may sacrifice star to raise funds for the summer transfer window

The Old Trafford side are reportedly keen to make additions to their squad in a bid to challenge for the Premier League title next season.

Manchester United may sacrifice David De Gea to raise funds for the overhaul of their squad in the upcoming summer transfer window, reports Goal.

The Red Devils brought in Bruno Fernandes from Portuguese outfit Sporting CP in January and are once again ready to splash the cash to bolster their squad ahead of next season.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer is aware that United need new signings to overturn their fortunes on the pitch and compete for the Premier League title in the near future.

The Old Trafford side are currently sitting at 5th place in the league table as they look to usurp Chelsea and finish in the top four to qualify for next season’s Champions League.

Man United might sell De Gea to raise transfer funds

Provided the club decide to cash-in on the in-demand Spanish goalkeeper, they’d be able to raise substantial funds from his transfer.

De Gea signed a contract extension with Man United last September which is bound to keep him at the club until the end of the 2022/23 season.

His new deal with the club allayed fears of United’s faithful that the ex-Athletic Bilbao player could leave for free at the end of this season upon the expiry of his previous contract.

The reported change in United’s stance has come five years after only a technical error stopped the Spaniard from joining Real Madrid in the summer transfer window of 2015.

He was at the peak of his powers back then and might have helped the Old Trafford side earn more than €100m from his transfer that failed to go through.

After the season which the Spain Number 1. Is having at the Old Trafford Stadium, it is easy to predict why Man United might want to sell him less than a few months after renewing his contract.

The 29-year-old only has the 10th best save percentage of any goalkeeper in the English top-flight this campaign. His save percentage of 68.8% puts De Gea behind the likes of Southampton’s Alex McCarthy and Brighton’s Matthew Ryan, two goalkeepers whose team are battling relegation this term.

Apart from his own average form in front of his goal, it is the form of Dean Henderson, the United goalkeeper who is currently playing on loan for Premier League newcomers Sheffield United, that might convince United to let go of De Gea at the end of this season.

The 22-year-old English goalkeeper has the 2nd best save percentage of any goalkeeper in the Premier League this term, with his 75.3% save percentage putting Henderson ahead of the likes of Kasper Schmeichel of Leicester City and Arsenal’s Bernd Leno.

For this reason, if Man United feel that they could wisely re-spend the transfer money that is bound to come in the club’s coffers after the reported departure of the Spaniard, it makes sense to end De Gea’s nine-year-long association with the club this summer.
