Manchester United are reportedly preparing a sensational £130m transfer bid for Leicester duo James Maddison and Ben Chilwell in the January transfer window.

The Red Devils have suffered a dreadful start to the 2019/20 season, winning just two of their opening eight games in the Premier League.

Last Sunday’s defeat at relegation-battling Newcastle United means that this is now United’s worst start to a season for over three decades.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s men are yet to win an away game in any competition since March, a run that extends to 11 games and counting. They have only defeated four teams since the permanent appointment of the Norwegian as club’s manager back in March, including 2 this season.

Little wonder, then, that after spending north of £100m to address the deficiencies the squad in the summer, United are once again ready to spend big in January.

According to the Sun, the Manchester United hierarchy have green signaled to Solskjaer that they would sanction 130m for the signing of Leicester duo James Maddison and Ben Chilwell in January

The report further claims that United sent scouts to watch the pair in action during Leicester’s recent matches against Tottenham and Liverpool.

It further claims that the club’s higher-ups were impressed by what they saw from the duo back when Manchester United defeated Leicester 1-0 earlier this campaign.

Quoting a club source, the news claims that United have been watching the development of the duo for a few years now, and both of them fit the criteria which the club expects any potential new signings to meet.

However, it goes on to state that the Red devils know that the Foxes might not be amenable to let the dup depart in January, with concerns that there aren’t many players on the market which can adequately take their place in the Leicester squad.

How will the potential arrival of Madison and Chilwell help United?

The arrival of the duo at the club would be a huge boost for the ailing Manchester United squad which has been ravaged by injuries since the start of this campaign.

Maddison is a ready-made player for United as his movement with the ball and pressing without it makes him a perfect candidate to start alongside Paul Pogba in the United lineup.

The English international has impressed a host of teams with his form for Leicester this season and has already earned his first call to represent the senior England squad.

Chilwell, 22, would prove equally crucial if he ends up at Old Trafford. Repeated injuries to Luke Shaw has left Solskjaer with no option but to deputize Ashley Young in that make-shift role, with the 34-year-old winger unable to play well on the left side of the United’s defense.

Therefore, regardless of how much they might end up costing the club, both Maddison and Chilwell are players who have the capability to represent the 20-time Premier League champions for years to come.
