- Newcastle United are close to landing Arsenal youngster Joe Willock on loan for the remainder of the season
- The 21-year-old midfielder has made the lion’s share of his 17 appearances for the Gunners in the Europa League this season
- His arrival at the club would allow Steve Bruce’s side to strengthen their push for safety in the Premier League
Newcastle United are close to signing Joe Willock on loan from Arsenal for the remainder of the 2020/21 campaign, reports Team Talk.
The 20-year-old central midfielder has scored 3 goals for Arsenal in 17 appearances in all competitions so far this season. Majority of his appearances for the Gunners – as well as all his goals and three assists – have come in the Europa League though.
That shouldn’t come as a surprise for two specific reasons. Mikel Arteta already has the likes of Granit Xhaka, Emile Smith Rowe, Dani Ceballos and Mohamed Elneny who could play in the same central midfield position in which Willock has shone for the Gunners.
Then there is the fact that the Englishman is only 21 years of age and might help the Gunners more by coming in from the bench than starting every game from the first whistle. His potential move to Newcastle would thus give the youngster an opportunity to get more regular first-team football.
How will Newcastle lineup with Joe Willock?
Steve Bruce’s side, who were on a six game winless run in all competitions before defeating Everton at the weekend, employs the more conventional 4-4-2 formation, with Jonjo Shelvey and Issac Hayden playing in the center of the park for the Magpies.
Willock plays in the same right-central-midfield role as Shelvey but is not expected to replace the former Liverpool man in the starting XI. He’s therefore expected to play a bit part role for the Magpies, mostly featuring as a substitute while also appearing in the Newcastle lineup should those ahead of him in the pecking order have an injury problem.
