The 18-year-old Man United academy graduate helped the club reach the last 32 of the Europa League by opening the scoring during his side’s 3-0 win over Partizan Belgrade on Thursday.

Ole Gunnar Solskjaer has claimed that Mason Greenwood’s finishing reminds him of former Man United striker Robin Van Persie, as per Sky Sports News.

The Man United manager made this comparison after the 18-year-old opened the club’s scoring during their 3-0 victory against Partizan Belgrade on Thursday, with the win confirming United’s place in the last 32 of the Europa League.

Despite being the 3rd choice center forward for the Red Devils, Greenwood is the 2nd top scorer for the club so far this season. The 18-year-old forward has come through the ranks of Man United academy system and has impressed during his 2nd campaign with the senior side.

And his performances for the club haven’t gone unnoticed, with Solskjaer claiming that the teenager is ‘’on the up again’’ after going through some difficult periods in his nascent Man United career.

Speaking to the press after seeing his side book their place in the last 32 of the Europa League, Solskjaer praised the striker for his natural finishing instinct.

When suggested by the journalist that Greenwood’s finishing is similar to that of Van Persie, the Man United manager replied: “Definitely.

“He is very composed with his finishing. It is natural for him. Right foot, left foot I still don’t think he knows which is his best one which is very difficult for defenders to defend against.

“But the good thing is he can do it at Old Trafford in front of a full crowd. He doesn’t get fazed by the occasion so he is still composed.

“If that takes a couple of years for [Greenwood] to really come through it is worth it for us. I am managing for Manchester United, not for myself. I am managing the best way I think we can get the best out of Mason.”

Greenwood is performing brilliantly in cup competitions

Why Mason Greenwood deserves more Premier League minutes after his Europa League heroics for Manchester United

Greenwood signed a new four-year contract with the club only last month and has already shown signs of becoming a crucial player for the side in the coming years.

Although the teenager is yet to score in the Premier League this season, despite making 8 appearances for the club, his form in cup competitions has been hugely encouraging.

In his last 4 starts in cup competitions, Greenwood has scored 3 goals for Man United, one of which proved to be the winner against Astana on matchday one of the Europa League.

Consequently, while the return to fitness of Anthony Martial might limit game time for him in the Premier League, the club’s academy graduate is likely to get plenty of opportunities in club competitions.

Provided he keeps on performing as he has already this campaign, the young forward would be in a much better position to make his case as a starter for Man United in all competitions. And if he’s able to do that, it would pose a welcome selection dilemma for Solskjaer.
