The 32-year-old will leave the Parc des Princes before the expiry of his contract with Paris Saint-Germain at the end of the ongoing season.

PSG striker Edinson Cavani is in talks with Atletico Madrid and might join the La Liga giants in next month’s January transfer window.

The 32-year-old has less than seven months remaining on his contract with PSG and will be free to negotiate with other clubs in January with a view to securing a free permanent transfer in the summer.

His six-and-a-bit year spell at the Parc des Princes has been fruitful for both Cavani and the club, with the Uruguayan helping PSG win five Ligue 1 titles, among other trophies.

However, apart from the meteoric rise of Kylian Mbappe since his move from AS Monaco and the arrival of Mauro Icardi from Inter Milan, the injuries suffered by the 32-year-old this season has limited game time for Cavani who looks set to leave the Ligue 1 giants next month.

Respected Italian football journalist Gianluca Di Marzio has claimed that Atleti are already in talks with the Uruguayan and would love to have him at the club next month.

He further claims that the main reason why the colchoneros have accelerated their transfer push for the Uruguayan is the injury suffered by Diego Costa.

The former Chelsea striker is currently on the sidelines due to an injury he suffered last month and won’t be available for selection until the second half of February.

Apart from helping the club fare better in the absence of the Spaniard, Atleti are hopeful that Cavani would help them better negotiate their fixtures in both the La Liga and the Champions League.

The Uruguayan’s potential arrival at the Wanda Metropolitana stadium will be a huge boost for the struggling Atletico Madrid strike force which has managed to score only 20 goals in 18 La Liga appearances so far this season.

Roadblocks that stand in the way of the transfer

Di Marzio further claims that while Atletico are fully prepared to make their move for the striker, there are some issues they need to resolve first if they want to bring Cavani to the club.

The first issue relates to the club’s finances. La Liga has imposed a salary cap for each of its participants and Atletico, who already pay huge amounts of money in salaries to the likes of Lemar and summer-signing Joao Felix, have to sell players before bringing in the Uruguayan if they wish to comply with the rule.

Secondly, since Cavani won’t be free to negotiate with other clubs till January, Atletico have to talk directly with PSG to secure the 32-year-old’s transfer next month. There is still no agreement between both clubs about the modalities of any agreement that would see Cavani moving to Spain.

However, while these issues do remain, Di Marzio claims that they aren’t affecting Cavani who has his heart set on playing under Simeone, the Argentine manager who has been courting the striker for years and consider him as the panacea to his side’s goalscoring woes.

That means that if Atletico are able to find new clubs for several of their players and reach an agreement with PSG, Cavani might well be making his Champions League debut for the club against Liverpool in the quarter-final of this season’s competition in February next year.
