Real Madrid manager Zinedine Zidane was unhappy at his team’s lack of intensity after the 13-time European Champions were defeated 3-0 by Paris Saint-Germain in their Champions League opener on Wednesday.

Real, who have lifted the trophy a record 13 times, were overwhelmed in all departments by a PSG side which was without the likes of Neymar, Edinson Cavani and Kylian Mbappe.

While Real struggled in all departments, it was especially their midfield duo of Toni Kroos and Luka Modric which was run over by the PSG duo of Marco Veratti and former Everton man Idrissa Gueye.

Consequently, with Real unable to cope with the intensity of PSG’s midfield, they found themselves two goals behind before the half-time, with former Angel Di Maria scoring on both occasions against his former club.

In the 2nd half, Real controlled much of the possession but were unable to do a lot with it, before Meunier scored on the 90th minute mark to put the game beyond doubt.

Zidane - Everybody is to blame for the defeat

Speaking after the defeat, the former French World Cup winner revealed that the entire team deserves the blame for what happened on Wednesday night.

‘Clearly they were better than us in every department – in the way they played, in midfield,’ the French manager said after seeing Real Madrid lose 3-0 to PSG.

‘What upset me is that we did not put enough intensity in the game and at that level of competition, it’s not possible. ‘You can play badly but if you have the intensity, if you fight for the ball, you’re in the game.’

Goalkeeper Thibaut Courtois had another off-game for the Los Blancos, though Zidane rubbished any criticism of the former Chelsea man.

‘It’s everybody’s fault. We win together, lose together,’ he said.

Zidane under more pressure after PSG defeat

After seeing the Spanish giants crumble to a 3-0 defeat at PSG, the European media tore into Zidane and his men for Real Madrid’s lack luster display at the Parc des Princes.

When the Frenchman returned to kick start his 2nd spell as Real Madrid manager in the middle of last season, the club’s faithful hoped that he’d take the club back to to where it belonged. Ten months down the line, the Los Blancos seem as far away from building a title-winning side as they did during the whole of last season.

Also, while Zidane’s two immediate predecessors had the excuse of Ronaldo’s departure to try and obscure their failures, the French manager has nowhere to hide. While they didn’t get him Paul Pogba from Manchester United, Real’s higher-ups did reinforce the squad by sanctioning money for the signings of Eden Hazard, Luka Jovic and Ferland Mendy.

Two of these three players started the game at Parc des Princes on Tuesday, though none came out of it with their reputation intact. The European press was particularly brutal towards the game Hazard had as French news outlet L’Equipe gave the former Chelsea winger a two out of 10 rating in their post-match analysis.

At the same time during which Real are struggling, there have been rumors of the club making a move for Jose Mourinho in the not-so-distant future. If Zidane is unable to get his team back to winning streak, these rumors will gain credence with each passing day.
