In addition to the reigning European champions, Premier League giants Chelsea and Manchester United are also reportedly after the signature of the Bundesliga joint top-scorer.

RB Leipzig striker and joint Bundesliga top-scorer Timo Werner wants to join Liverpool in the summer transfer window, reports German news publication Bild.

The 23-year-old German international has been in the form of his life for Julian Nagelsmann’s side this season who currently sit at the top of the Bundesliga table.

RB Leipzig have managed to win four out of their last five games in the league to open a four-point gap with 2nd placed reigning champions Bayern Munich.

The report that the Merseyside is the preferred destination of the €60m rated striker has come just a few days after it emerged that Chelsea and Manchester United were ready to battle the Reds for the striker’s signature.

Bild reports that while the player has decided that he wants to be a Liverpool player, he is yet to decide when to put pen on paper with the Premier League leaders.

There were rumors that the striker might leave Leipzig last season before he signed a four-year extension that could keep him at the Bundesliga outfit until 2023.

His recent contract contains an exit clause which clearly states that any club willing to sign the striker would have to pay Leipzig’s asking price of €60m which they might demand in exchange for Werner.

But as Bild notes in the same report, the amount stated in the exit clause is going to decrease with each passing year, meaning Liverpool might have to pay much less if they are to sign the 23-year-old in the summer.

Though the fact that the Reds didn’t sign any player in the previous summer transfer window before snapping up Takumi Minamino for just £7.25m in January means they’d enough money even if Leipzig refuses to budge on their initial valuation of the in-form striker.

Why Manchester City are struggling in the Premier League this season

Why Werner’s signing would be a huge boost for Liverpool?

He has scored 21 goals in 25 league appearances this season

Werner has managed to score 20 goals in just 18 appearances for the Red Bull Arena residents already this season to emerge as the joint top-scorer in the top tier of German football.

While he shares the top spot with Bayern’s Robert Lewandowski, the RB Leipzig striker has a better goal-per-minute ratio than the Polish striker.

The Bayern striker has managed to score one goal per 80 minutes this term in the league, whereas Werner has found the back of the net every 76 minutes this campaign.

Despite playing fewer minutes overall (1515) than his counterpart in Munich (1592), Werner has assisted more goals (6) than the Bayern forward who has just two assists to his name.

His shot-to-goal conversion rate is also better than the man who has managed to win three out of the last six Golden boots in the previous seasons. It shouldn’t be surprising then that while Liverpool have been reported as the preferred destination of the German international, Bayern are also reportedly after his signature.
