Real Madrid have suffered yet another injury blow after it was confirmed on Thursday that midfielder Luka Modric is facing a spell on the sidelines.

The news of the Croatian injury, which was confirmed by the Spanish club via a statement, couldn’t have come at a bad time for the 13-time European Champions as they enter a busy period of fixtures starting Saturday.

After hosting Levante at an early-kickoff fixture on Saturday, Real Madrid then travel to Paris to face Ligue 1 Champions Paris St-Germain in four days’ time to play their first game of their Champions League‘ season.

Five days later, the Los Blancos travel to Seville to face an upbeat Sevilla side which currently sits 2 points above them in the nascent La Liga table.

That fixture will be followed by Real Madrid playing 4 games in less than a fortnight before the arrival of November’s international break. With games coming so thick and fast, the news regarding Modric’s injury has come at an unfortunate time for Zidane and his side.

How serious is Modric's injury?

While the statement given by the club didn’t reveal the time for which the Croatian has been ruled out, it did confirm that the Croatian faces a spell on the sidelines.

The statement from Real Madrid read: “The Real Madrid player, Luka Modric, suffers a muscle injury in the adductor of his right leg, read a Real Madrid club statement as reported by Cadena Cope.

“The Croatian who is celebrating his 34th birthday will not be able to participate in this Saturday’s match against Levante. The timing of the return of his injury is pending evolution.”

On the back of a season which saw him winning the Ballon D’or, Modric was nominated in the Real Madrid starting XI that took on Celta Vigo on the opening day of the 2019/20 LA Liga season.

The midfielder, however, wasn’t able to complete the full 90 minutes as he was given his marching orders late in the 2nd half. The 34-year-old was shown a red card after the referee adjudged his tackle on Denis Suarez to be harmful.

Injury crisis deepens at Real Madrid

The news of Modric’s injury has come at a time for Los Blancos when they are already facing a shortage of key players in the attacking department.

Earlier in the week, new signing Luka Jovic also succumbed to an injury while playing for his national side in the Euro qualifiers. The Serbian exacerbate an existing injury as he came on from the bench during his country’s defeat at the hands of Portugal.

In addition to the duo, midfielder Isco is facing more time on the sidelines after suffering yet another injury in his stop-start Real Madrid career. James Rodriguez and Marco Asensio are the other two players who would watch Saturday’s game from the sidelines.

The current injury crisis has come at a time when manager Zinedine Zidane is looking for ways to put his side back on the winning track. In their opening 3 games of the La Liga season, Real Madrid have won only 1 and draw the remaining two fixtures.

What’s more, Levante, the side Real Madrid will face on Saturday, are yet to be beaten in the last 3 fixtures involving both sides. And with Bale also suspended from the game, Zidane might be forced to nominate a new-look starting XI for this fixture.
