The former Watford striker joined the Red Devils on a six-month loan deal from Chinese Super League outfit Shanghai Shenhua in the January transfer window.

Manchester United are ready to pay up to £15m to turn the loan stay of Odion Ighalo at the club into permanent, reports Mail Online.

The Nigerian international was initially seen as a temporary signing by the club as fans viewed Ighalo as a stop-gap figure who could help the side during the second half of the ongoing season.

Many claimed that United’s failure to land a first-choice striker in January coupled with the injury of Marcus Rashford forced them to sign the 30-year-old on an emergency basis.

While those reports were undoubtedly accurate, the performances Ighalo has put in during his first few months in Manchester have convinced the Red Devils higher-ups to extend his stay at Old Trafford beyond this summer.

United want to sign Ighalo permanently

Since his arrival at the club at the end of January, Ighalo has proved his utility for his side by scoring four goals in his first eight appearances.

The 30-year-old is an old-fashioned center forward who gives those around him the freedom to run with the ball by acting as a focal point upfront.

His ball-retention ability has been one United had been missing before his arrival as neither Marcus Rashford nor Anthony Martial are natural center-forwards.

While the England international Rashford has the ability to penetrate opposition defenses with his raw pace down the flanks, Martial is at his best when he is cutting in from inside the left channel.

United might already have Marcus Greenwood who could play as a central striker but his young age means that the Red Devils cannot afford to put too much pressure on their academy graduate.

Ighalo deserves to stay at United beyond this summer

Apart from scoring four goals in all competitions for United since his arrival from China, Ighalo has also provided a solitary assist to his teammates.

These aren’t earth-shattering numbers once one considers that the striker is yet to score in the Premier League, but they do suggest that with Rashford back in the line-up and Greenwood getting better with age, Ighalo would be a decent option to have on the bench.

The Nigerian international is a boyhood United fan and has seemed to bond well with the Old Trafford faithful who love his admiration for the club ever since he was a youngster playing for Prime in his native country.

Consequently, apart from providing a potent attacking threat from the bench, the presence of Ighalo in his squad would help manager Ole Gunnar Solskjaer get the fans behind his side as United continue their rebuilding process to try and come back as one of the major forces in English football.
