Ronaldinho, who lifted 1 World Cup title alongside Ronaldo, claimed that the entire Brazilian nation is excited about the 18-year-old.

‘We as Brazilians are very excited about him and his future. It is one thing to have the talent – but another at the age of 18 to have the confidence,’ Ronaldinho told the Mirror.

He reminds me of Ronaldo his first season in Europe, he scored 30 goals and people were thinking: “who is this 18-year-old Brazilian kid?”

‘He wanted the ball, he would run at players, there was no fear no matter what players or team he was playing against – and I see that similar attitude in Martinelli.

‘He just wants to be on the ball and score goals. Ronaldo went on to be the best player in the world – and that can also be the aim of Martinelli.’

The 18-year-old has been in fine form this season

Since securing a €6m move to the Emirates last summer, Martinelli has emerged as one of the club’s best performers in all competitions.

Martinelli had to wait for five months to make his first start in the Premier League for the Gunners, but he had shown his potential with his performances for the club in cup competitions by then.

The 18-year-old has managed to score 7 goals in only 6 starts for Mikel Arteta’s side in cup competitions this season, with the Brazilian scoring another 3 in five starts in the Premier League.

He was also on the score-sheet during Arsenal’s last game in the Premier League, a 2-2 away draw at Chelsea in which Martinelli ran the length of the pitch to score a solo goal.

While comparisons with legendary footballers no doubt seem premature at this time, one cannot deny that the youngster could reach new heights in his career if he builds on the form he has shown in his first few months in the top tier of English football.
