The Brazil legend tips the youngster to follow in the footsteps of his teammate

The legendary former footballer further claimed that the young Arsenal forward can follow in the footsteps of the Brazilian Ronaldo after impressing in his first season in the Premier League.

Ronaldinho has claimed that young Arsenal forward Gabriel Martinelli reminds him of Brazil legend Ronaldo and tips him to follow in the footsteps of the former Real Madrid striker.

The 18-year-old who left Brazilian club Ituano to move to North London in the summer has surprised everyone with how easily he has adapted to life in England.

Martinelli has found the back of the net 10 times in his first 21 appearances for the Gunners, while also creating 3 goals for his teammates in the process.

His brilliant performances have earned the young striker plaudits from home and abroad, with his country-mate Ronaldinho claiming that the young Arsenal striker reminds him of Brazilian Ronaldo.

Ronaldinho, who lifted 1 World Cup title alongside Ronaldo, claimed that the entire Brazilian nation is excited about the 18-year-old.

‘We as Brazilians are very excited about him and his future. It is one thing to have the talent – but another at the age of 18 to have the confidence,’ Ronaldinho told the Mirror.

He reminds me of Ronaldo his first season in Europe, he scored 30 goals and people were thinking: “who is this 18-year-old Brazilian kid?”

‘He wanted the ball, he would run at players, there was no fear no matter what players or team he was playing against – and I see that similar attitude in Martinelli.

‘He just wants to be on the ball and score goals. Ronaldo went on to be the best player in the world – and that can also be the aim of Martinelli.’

Since securing a €6m move to the Emirates last summer, Martinelli has emerged as one of the club’s best performers in all competitions.

Martinelli had to wait for five months to make his first start in the Premier League for the Gunners, but he had shown his potential with his performances for the club in cup competitions by then.

The 18-year-old has managed to score 7 goals in only 6 starts for Mikel Arteta’s side in cup competitions this season, with the Brazilian scoring another 3 in five starts in the Premier League.

He was also on the score-sheet during Arsenal’s last game in the Premier League, a 2-2 away draw at Chelsea in which Martinelli ran the length of the pitch to score a solo goal.

While comparisons with legendary footballers no doubt seem premature at this time, one cannot deny that the youngster could reach new heights in his career if he builds on the form he has shown in his first few months in the top tier of English football.
