Lionel Messi has beaten Cristiano Ronaldo to become the highest-rated player in FIFA 21, player ratings released by EA Sports show.
The 33-year-old Argentina international had a 2019/20 season to forget as his Barcelona side went a full season without any trophy for the first time in over a decade. Barca were beaten to the La Liga title by fierce rivals Real Madrid and were demolished in the Champions League semi-final by Bayern Munich.
His personal form for Barca, though better than his teammates, was still someway short of the high standards Messi has set for himself in previous seasons. The 23-goals that he managed during the 19/20 La Liga season was the worst the 33-year-old managed in more than a decade.
But the Argentine superstar more than made up for this by providing a career high 20-assists in the Spanish top-flight last term, thereby becoming the first player in La Liga’s history to both score and assist 20+ goals in a single season.
The 35-year-old Juventus forward had his best season in Italy since moving to Turin from Real Madrid two seasons ago. Ronaldo scored 31 goals in only 33 Serie A appearances and further cemented his reputation as one of the world’s best by netting 4 goals in 8 Champions League games.
The Portuguese is followed by Bayern Munich forward Robert Lewandowski on the list. The 32-year-old Poland international had arguably the best season of his life last term as his 47 goals in only 55 games allowed Bayern to win the European treble.
Lewandowski has got the same rating as Manchester City midfielder Kevin De Bruyne, PSG superstar Neymar and Atletico Madrid goalkeeper Jan Oblak. The quartet has all been awarded 91 rating by the America-based eGaming giant.
Given the fact that their side won the Premier League title with a record 18 points, it shouldn’t come as a surprise that four Liverpool players have made it to the top ten of FIFA 21 ratings.
All four of them – Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane, Virgil Van Dijk, Alisson Becker – played a huge part in the Reds’ ending their 30-year-long weight for the Premier League title. They have been rewarded for their performances with a 90 rating by EA Sports.
The quartet is joined on the same rating by PSG forward Kylian Mbappe and Barcelona goalkeeper Marc-Andre Ter Stegen. Mbappe once again proved his potential last season as his 20 goals in Ligue 1 catapulted PSG to yet another domestic league title.
Ter Stegen, meanwhile, wasn’t able to help his side win trophies but played a key role in them getting to the Champions League semi-final. His excellent performances for Barcelona also helped the German compete with Manuel Neuer for the No.1 spot in the Germany national team.
Dossiers for lover and hater. Triumphs, tragedies, embarrassments, victories of all Bundesliga clubs.
