Three major swap deals that are likely to happen in the 2020 summer transfer window

With the financial impact of the coronavirus pandemic forcing clubs to tighten their purse strings, the 2020 summer transfer window might see a plethora of player-swap deals.

#1: Alexandre Lacazette – Thomas Partey

Arsenal manager Mikel Arteta will have to clear out some old faces before he can bring in the new ones who could help him implement his philosophy at the Emirates.

One of the players who could make way is Alexandre Lacazette. The former Lyon striker hasn’t been in the best of form this season and wouldn’t antagonize the Gunners’ faithful with his departure if that meant that they would be getting Thomas Partey in return.

The Atletico Madrid defensive midfielder has long been on the Gunners’ transfer radar who are looking for someone to strengthen the heart of their midfield. He has been in fine form for Diego Simeone’s side this season and is definitely an upgrade to the option Arteta currently has at Arsenal.

Arteta currently has the likes of Matteo Guendouzi, among others, to shore his defensive midfield line – players who are quite a few levels below at which Partey plies his trade.

2: Leroy Sane – David Alaba

With the Man City’s winger’s heart set on a move to the German capital, it remains to be seen how far Bayern would go in their pursuit of the speedster.

The Manchester City winger has long been on the transfer radar of Bayern Munich who initially wanted to sign him last summer but hedged their bets after an injury early on in the season ruled Sane out for much of the season.

It was expected at the time that the reigning Premier League champions could pocket-in as much as £100m from the departure of the German – though the figure has since come down to a meager £35m as coronavirus has changed the financial equation of the German giants.

City aren’t expected to let go of their prized asset for such a derisory figure, though, which is what makes it a possibility that Bayern might try to test the waters by offering a player-plus-cash deal in which Alaba would be swapping the Red of the Bavarians for the light blue of the Citizens.

3: Paul Pogba - Aaron Ramsey

As we have reported in these pages before, Manchester United, who were initially adamant on receiving bucket-loads of cash to sanction the departure of Pogba, are now amenable to other means.

Juventus still want to sign Paul Pogba; it’s just that they have one eye on their coffers and with coronavirus ravaging the finances of clubs, there’s not much optimism among pundits that the Old Lady could cough up as much as £100m this summer.

This realization is what may have forced the Juve higher-ups to get innovative, as news in Italy have begun touting a deal that would involve Aaron Ramsey going back to England. The former Arsenal midfielder might be a part of the deal that would unite Pogba and Cristiano Ronaldo at the Turin stadium.

Obviously, much still needs to be done if the deal is to go over the line. While Pogba is still reportedly keen to leave Old Trafford – as his agent never fails to remind us, whether or not Aaron Ramsey would be willing to leave the security of serial title winning side of Juve to come at a United side that is still very much in the rebuilding phase remains to be seen.
