Top five Premier League players of 2020, revealed and ranked

With the arrival of 2021 now upon us, Ligalive has decided to prepare the list of top ten players who took the Premier League by storm in 2020.

Bruno Fernandes leads our list of top ten Premier League players of 2020 after managing the most goal contributions (31) by a midfielder in a calendar year.

The Portugal international was snapped up by Manchester United at a time when they were struggling to get into top four. Less than 12 months later, his performances have helped the Red Devils mount a title challenge, with Ole Gunnar Solskjaer’s side sitting above Manchester City in the league table.

His impact upon the Red Devils’ isn’t limited to his goal contributions only. As evidenced by United’s comeback victory over Newcastle United earlier this season – which came about only after Fernandes came in for the 2nd half, the Portuguese has helped his teammates take their game to the next level too.

Little wonder, then, that while some publications have included Fernandes in their Premier League best 11 for 2020, others have gone as far as to (deservedly) nominate the Portuguese as the Premier League player of the year.

2) Jack Grealish – Aston Villa

The year 2020 has been immense for the Aston Villa skipper. Grealish almost single-handed saved his boyhood club from relegation last term – scoring 8 goals and setting up another six for his teammates, before leading their strong start to the ongoing campaign.

Dean Smith’s side currently sit at 5th place in the league table, just seven shy of leaders Liverpool whom they trounced at home earlier this season. Had it not been for their captain’s five goals and six assists in only 14 league appearances, that simply won’t have been possible.

3) Sadio Mane – Liverpool

Every neutral fan thinks Mohamed Salah is the most important player for Liverpool. The Reds’ faithful who watch their team every weekend disagree. It is the Senegal international – who scored 18 goals last term and has managed 6 already this season – who is the lynchpin of their side’s attack.

The reason Mane doesn’t dominate headlines as much as his Egyptian teammate mainly has to do with the goalscoring numbers of Salah, which almost always dwarf those of Mane. However, if the overall contribution is to be factored in, Mane is as if not more important a player for Liverpool than Salah.

4) Mohamed Salah – Liverpool

Few players have been able to prove their critics wrong in the Premier League after they were shipped out following an underwhelming spell at one of its ‘Big Six’ clubs. Fewer still have managed to do so while becoming the poster boy of the side that gave them the chance to prove doubters wrong.

That Mohamed Salah has been able to do both – and become one of the top Premier League players in 2020 – serves as a reminder to anyone who is struggling to hit their goals that if you try hard enough and long enough, doors of success will open.

5) Son Heung-min – Tottenham Hotspur

Only a few weeks after his appointment as Tottenham manager, Jose Mourinho told Harry Kane that he’d turn him into one of the best strikers of the game. Little did the Portuguese know at that time that he’d be doing a similar service another of his side’s strikers, the South Korean Son Heung-min.

Then why didn’t we include Kane in our list of the top five Premier League players in 2020? Mainly because it is his teammate who has scored more non-penalty goals (26) than any Premier League player over the past 12 months, with Son even outscoring Lionel Messi who managed 18 goals excluding penalties.
