How Tottenham could line up under Jose Mourinho?

The North London club appointed the former Real Madrid manager as their head coach following the sacking of Mauricio Pochettino on Tuesday evening.

Tottenham have appointed Jose Mourinho as the club’s new manager less than a day after the sacking of former head coach Mauricio Pochettino.

The Argentine enjoyed a largely successful five-and-a-half-year spell at the North London club during which he took the Lilywhites to their first-ever Champions League final.

Spurs’ extended poor start to the ongoing season cost Pochettino his job as the club currently sit at 14th place in the Premier League table after 12 games on the board.

Chairman Daniel Levy wasted no time in appointing his successor and Jose Mourinho is set to take charge of Tottenham for their Saturday’s trip to fellow London outfit West Ham united.

How Spurs could line up under Mourinho?

The 56-year-old Portuguese manager has a record of winning the domestic league title in four European leagues and shares the reputation of being a defensive-minded coach.

Provided Mourinho goes for his classic 4-2-3-1 formation, that would see Harry Kane becoming the sole attacking option for Spurs.  The England national team skipper has been in fine form for a struggling Spurs side this season and has already netted 6 goals in his 11 Premier League appearances.

The England international would be provided service by the likes of Heung Min-Son, Christian Eriksen and Delle Alli, as the Portuguese manager is expected to give more game time than his predecessor to the latter two players who have been out of form for months.

Should that force Erkisen to change his mind and sign a new contract with Spurs remains to be seen, but it will make the Dan the pivot of the entire Spurs squad. Dele Alli, meanwhile, could benefit from the defensive outlook of his new boss to play his way into form.

The Portuguese manager is expected to field the defensive midfield pairing of Moussa Dembele and summer signing Tanguy Ndombele, with the likes of Serge Aurier, Toby Alderweireld, Jan Vertonghen and Ben Davies in Spurs’ defense, and Paulo Gazzaniga in goal.

Is Mourinho an upgrade over Pochettino?

While only time will tell whether the decision to replace the Argentine with the Portuguese had any merits, it cannot be denied that Mourinho has been a serial winner in his managerial career.

Right from the start of his managerial career with FC Porto, whom he led to a Champions League victory in the 2003/04 season, the 56-year-old has always led his team to trophies.

Mourinho holds the record that no matter where he has coached in his nearly two-decade-long managerial career, he has won at least three trophies with the club. That includes his last stint with Manchester United whom he coached to a Europa League title in the 2017/18 season.

As a result, while there will be ramblings by the Spurs’ fans regarding the defensive mindset with which he sends out his teams to play, nobody can deny that if trophies are the final goal, there aren’t many managers in the world football who are a better bet than the Special One.
